I am looking for a pattern for a large purse/tote for a 7 year old. I intended on doing a jean purse like I used to, but I think I want something bigger and more "girly" for her age. I plan to make it like a travel bag...a book, tablet, pencils, "make up" bag etc. I know I can do a search and will, but would like to know if anyone has a site or pattern they like that would be good for this and I can get for free. Also if you have any ideas on pouches or things to put in it...I am a very organized person, so there is a place for everything! I am not around kids much anymore so I don't know what they like anymore. She doesn't have (thankfully) a cell or iPod or anything like that, but I want it to be for traveling kind of. They go camping during the summer and long car trips here and there Thanks for your help!

There is a web site called 25 things to do with fat quarters (fabric not money. My seven year old niece told me to add this) and they several projects. I have seen a couple of projects that I might use to make cell phone cases to sell online. I also found on a different web site where you can use left over scrap fabric to make bracelets. I am going to try that then post it on here so people can see how they come out. It may be a few weeks before I get to this since I have other things to do.

I'll check it out. Fat quarters are equivelent of 1/4 yard of fabric..just in a square instead of a long piece. Measures 18x22. A 1/4 yard cut from bolt would mesure 9x44. FQ's are a good choice for quilts...easy cutting and next to no scraps! Nice to see the kids are still into hand made crafts instead of nothing buy hand held games!

I am on that site, but for quilts, forgot they had other things! I did just have a brain storm and went back to the jean purse... turned out cute I think, I'll get photo up. Now I need an activity bag thing for a 4 year old...crayons, paper etc.

http://sewing.about.com/od/bagstotespurseproject/ig/Free-Bag---Purse-Patterns/ try here - of course, I can make a super easy bag just by folding material, attaching straps and **BAM** tote!

I don't have a pattern for you, but I have an idea. Look up patterns for messenger bags, then use the denim but use a flowery fabric to make a ruffle to go around the flap. Then use that same flowery fabric to make inside pouches sized for pencils, makeup, cell phone, and even e-readers (you might want to make the Kindle case with some padding). I think the "flower child" look would be awesome!
