My love-hate relationship with Odesk

When I decided to look for ways to start working online, I read that Odesk is a good site that offers freelancers a lot of jobs. I applied but it took me months to get hired. During that time, I looked for other online opportunities in order to earn and stopped applying for Odesk. I don't even recommend it (look at my past discussions) because of certain reasons. But now that I was able to land 2 contracts, I must say Odesk is really financially rewarding and does pay better than any other online sites. How about you myLotters? How was your experience with Odesk? :)

Hi- I have done some assignments there but prefer to work on my own pace rather than on their schedule. I love to write on my own topics of interest although the topics we chose on ODesk are according to our choice but the time bound program is some thing I don't like a bit.

Some employers can be pretty demanding too. There are deadlines to follow and its hard because at times, they want you to deliver immediately. I don't have much time anymore with my other online activities since I'm focused on Odesk.

Really? I have been a member of Odesk since 2011 but I am not active because just what you said it is very hard to get hired. May I ask how to get hired in that site? Is it financially satisfying?

Hello iamsittie! Is it financially satisfying? Definitely. For me, getting lots of freelance jobs still pays the best compared to any other online sites or activities. How I got hired? I really don't know actually. Maybe a bit of luck. I just answered a couple of test and made sure i highlighted my strengths when submitting the cover letter :)

Bidding is when bid for a particular project with a certain amount. Usually, the lowest bidder gets the job. But you have to be careful also since you might be underpaid. In the end, it's not even going to be worth it. Much better if you get an hourly jobs, at least you get paid for every hour spent on working.

I am also a member of Freelancer in which I am not getting hired. And I do not understand the "bidding system". Thanks for that. Some say that freelance jobs have low payments that are only cents per job so that is why I am not focusing to those freelance jobs sites.

Hi Ayeeesha, I have signed up for Odesk a few days ago, but not with the serious intention to get job. I just want to see how the site works. I enjoy the different tests, and I get to see how I fare in relation with the rest of the people who have taken the same test. I think you can enhance your profile by taking more tests, and your score is better than the others.

Hello there! Yes, I did answered various tests to boast my skills to the employers :)) But it's really difficult to get a job, especially if what you'll apply to pertains to data entry, writing and other admin work. It took me some time although I wasn't really serious at getting a job there. I just want to try and earn money for myself while I stay at home and so far, Odesk has been providing me with good income :)

Hi Ayeeesha, I consider oDesk as the best online company where you can earn money. I have been working with oDesk for more than a year now. For that span of time, I now earned of about $4000. This is not to boast but to encourage anyone that oDesk is REALLY good! I have already worked for 15 contracts, ans luckily had made each successful. There are scammers, but less than that of any other sites. But surely now I can judge a posting if its a scam or not, it's not hard to tell a job to be fraudulent. Best wishes for you ayeeesha! And more powers!

Hi. I have just signed up for oDesk just a few days ago. I get frustrated because I haven't passed the oDesk Readiness Test. I've been taking it for so many times already and I haven't passed yet. But I had one interview invitation. :) oDesks's policy confuses me.

You can actually check the FAQs when taking the Odesk readiness exam :) Though I'm not sure whether that will affect your job applications. Though I noticed that some employers require contractors to pass certain exams before hiring them. I hope you'll be able to land that job you applied for :)

i'm the same as you, having a love hate realtionship and my experience is really similar to yours. i've been a member for some time actually and only landed 2 contracts this year, just before i was about to go on 6 mths holiday. one thing i have experienced and realised is that you need to be computer literate if you want to get some good jobs or if you are good in writing, then that also helps in landing jobs. if you are also experienced in working outside, that helps too when you write your resume as it makes your profile look more experienced and better. basically, looking for a job in odesk is the same as going out to look for jobs. best of luck to all you guys and to myself too

Hello ayeeesha! I do have a slightly different experience with Odesk. A couple of years ago, I learned about it from friends and I even have a friend who works full time in Odesk. He's a writer, maintains websites and do some data entry jobs as well. I put up my profile and began looking for jobs and I had some tips from friends on how to land a contract. It took probably a few weeks when I got my first contract, which was mostly copy-paste, then I had one with writing summaries on different subjects and even had a transcription job. The thing is, I was just starting back then and a tip they gave me was to lower my bidding so I got paid a little from them. The data entry and transcribing were month long contracts and I must say I have gained some skills. I was very happy back then but I found myself so stressed out because I had to work after my regular offline jobs and even on weekends. It was definitely rewarding but would require too much of my time as I work for at least 10 hours a day, 5-6 days a week for my offline job. I do miss working for Odesk though 'cause most of the employers there are actually pretty nice to give extra rewards and even a raise when they are happy with my work.

Hello penrockerchic! Jobs in Odesk cam be pretty demanding though not all. And it does take a lot of time. The good thing about my first employer now is we're from the same country so I can ask for an extension :)) and I do hope my current employers will give me rewards too :))

I have had a lot of work via Odesk. Mostly with data entry jobs and a few appointment settings. But what I had for a longer time was being a virtual assistant. It was difficult to find a job at first coz there are really a lot of applicants. But then when I had one, then a lot came after. There was also a time wherein I was the one looking for applicants to work for my tasks. It was fun!

I agree. It took me some time before I was able to land a job there. But what's really surprising is that after landing my first contract, a few came after :) But it was demanding though. And it takes time because I've been working for different employers at the same time. But I'm having fun, especially when I see that I'm actually rewarded for my hard work :)

Hi ayeesha! I'm happy to know that you are doing great on that site. I also signed up on odesk before but I did not attempt to look for a job there. I had a not so good experience with the other site, freelancer, which I ended up getting work from scammers so I did not bother to go to that site anymore. I was new then that was the reason why. So I decided to look for other source and I am happy with my present activities. Have a wonderful day!

Thanks aries1973! :) Odesk does have a lot of scammers too that's why I was very careful in choosing a job contract there. So far, they're paying and I'm happy about it :) I still do other online work like writing in Experts Column and its pretty good too, thanks for your tip in that by the way :) Have a great day too!
