Grinding teeth

Nairobi, Kenya

I have discovered I have a problem which I thought was no problem at all. I keep unconsciously grinding my teeth against each other. This makes the muscles of my jaws very tired. The grinding or chewing of the teeth happens unconsciously and more so when I am asleep. Is there any danger posed by this tendency? If yes, is there anything I can do to stop it?

Haha.. You are the same as my sister. When I used to grind my teeth every night during my sleep it did drove my sister crazy too. But she can't really blame me coz I don't have control over it.

Sometimes my kids grind teeth while asleep. I think it is b/c of stress. I saw that they have trays for teeth grinding at walmart. Thinking they were $30 or so.

Hmmm.. I got curious upon reading your post. What do you mean by trays? What exactly are they or what are their purpose?

Oh, that's nice to know. Great, I would like to hear more about it soon. Thanks!

They seemed like the trays you use for whitening teeth. They cover your teeth, I am not sure what they are made of. They come in a small box. I will check them out again next time I am in walmart.

my husband has the same problem as you do. he grinds his teeth at night. i think by grinding teeth you risk putting pressure on your back teeth, which could lead to wear and tear. i think if you tell your dentist the problem they should have a remedy. it's due to stress.

Yes, a dentist can be of great help. In addition to denstist, it would also be good to consult a psychologist because I was once told that aside from stress it can be that the person is trying to suppress something such as a grudge towards another person. It could be a great release to talk to them and could also help one become more aware of theirselves.

wow! i didn't know that grinding teeth could be due to having a grudge against another person. lol. i wonder why i don't grind my teeth. i have a couple of grudges.

LOL! Maybe you handle your grudge better. Besides, you won't really know if you grind your teeth when you asleep because you are unconscious, unless another person is watching you.

I think there's a rubber that you can put on your teeth, much like a mouth guard that boxers wear. Although they're thinner and more comfortable compared to those that athletes wear. This will protect your teeth from being damaged. I wouldn't know how to solve your jaw problem, though. I guess you can consult a psychiatrist.

That's true! It is really tiring for the jaw. But I also do that probably subconsciously even when I'm awake and then I start to realise it only when my jaw feels tired/a bit painful. I always thought it has something to do with stress. So I try to keep away from stress as much as possible.

Thanks to all those that have given me very useful hints such as stress needs to be managed. Yes, I have been going through very stressful moments lately. It also feels good to learn that I am not alone. Thanks a million friends.

I think it could cause harm in the surface of your teeth. Ypu'd better consult a dentist or another kind of expert on this.

Yup, it may harm the surface especially if it is already chronic or existing for a long time. I am glad I had very less occurrence of bruxism now and my teeth is still beautiful. LOL! :)

I have the same situation. They actually term that medically as bruxism. I happened to know tht condition of mine about 4 years ago. It is not really a dangerous problem but may lead to tdamages to the teeth due to teeth grinding amd could also cause jaw pain. I don't know if there is a way to stop it but since the primary source is stress, try to avoid stress and practice relaxation techniques.
