The irony of gold!

As you know the price of gold has sky rocketed the world over. Possessing gold is more a worrying proposition as there is every possibility that you will be robbed and even sometimes killed. Many have opted to wear artificial jewellery and keep their gold in lockers. The irony however is that the rich are anyway robbed as they assume it is real gold but the poor are not even if they wear real gold. It is assumed that they wear artificial gold. How can this dilemma be solved? Any suggestions? Are you frightened too? What's the point in keeping gold in lockers anyway if one cannot wear it.

IIt is a traditional thinking that gold would always appreciate in value and it would be some property to fall back on, in a crisis. Rich people also need diversification of assets and that is why gold, silver ,debt instruments, shares and land are thought of as different assets where they can invest their money in.However, no rich person sells gold and only very few people do that when they are in need. On the other hand, poor people use this as an asset that can easily be pawned in a pawn shop and they also make use of it unwisely paying extraordinary interests. This is caused by illiterate thinking in poor circles [in our country]. Regarding the dilemma you have mentioned, one way is that even rich people do not flaunt their wealth by living in posh bungalows and owning swanky cars. Only if others know that they are rich they would become soft targets and be robbed even when they are wearing artificial jewelry. This is one reason why we keep our gold in lockers. I have not bought one bit of gold after marriage but I have no right to get rid of what was given by my father as heirloom. I pay five thousand rupees annually to maintain a locker but this cannot be helped. It is my duty to safeguard what is given by my parents.

My husband also says the same thing and never believes in gold. But, when it has been passed on, we cannot do anything about it because we feel morally obliged to pass it on. Your maid has benefited like my sister's maid.My sister lost two heavy silver plates and promptly what dos she see ? There was a concrete ceiling on her maid's house instead of the thatched hut. Did your gold get robbed from your house when you were there or was it a locked house? We may finally be philosophical about it but at that point of time it is pretty painful. My sister's house was also burgled just two years ago and it was my mother who lost a lot of gold [she loves wearing these beads and she looks sooooo----o good in them allknowing! I felt terrible for her. She was also quite philosophical about it , the poor soul. Like a child she showed me a small case gifted to her by someone where she had arranged all her colourful beads strung in gold. The next time I saw her, it had gone. I can't explain how bad I felt. here jewelry alone did not go to the locker because she used to wear them.I felt very sorry for her though she resigned herself quickly to it as what she normally does.

You must be already knowing I had promised to build a house for this girl specially when she bent backwards to do so much for me when I had that accident. We could afford to give her that house. Her mother had a property. We laid the foundation and then told her that as and when our deposits mature some of them would be used to complete her house. She was in a hurry and her good-for-nothing husband must have given her this idea. She did it when she was visiting me occasionally to do some chores for us. I could have easily reported but I did not as the ramifications of that act would land us in a lot of hassles. Anyway I had to spend for her. And as you know we never sell gold. It would have just passed on. But these days no one wears gold and that passing on has lost its meaning. As far as gold is concerned one should remove that thought that it is a good investment. Wrong. It is a good investment only if it is sold but no one sells.

It is ironic that when gold that is supposed to be a safe investment more often than not remains as heirloom as in your case. What good is that yellow metal when all what it does is that it stays put in lockers kala? As you know mine was robbed. That would have been the same story even with mine as I would never sell it. But in a way it helped my maid build her house rather in a peculiar way and my deposits remained intact. You are right about the poor pawning their gold at high interest rates. No rich person will wear artificial gold and particularly not in India. I am confused.

I just take away that fear inside my head coz if that fear remains in me all the time, then I won't get to enjoy to wear my jewelries. So maybe it is just best to wear jewelries that are not to noticeable if you are just going to the mall or the park. And just splurge on all the sparkling ones when you are in a party.

No matter where one goes jenny the robbers keep an eye. We hear so much about robberies in our country. Owing gold is not a good idea at all.

So, you are not wearing your gold jewelries? I used to wear diamond studs and wear 4 rings and 3 bracelets. But as I grew older, I don't feel comfortable wearing them than usual. So now, I really just use them when I need to go to special occasions.

Well, as with most of the problems of the world, this problem can also be solved if some of the people in this world leave their exorbitant greed, the world gets more equitable distribution of wealth and resources, and moral values take centerstage in our lives. When people shall have enough, and be less greedy, they would not even think about robbing someone.

This has been going on for ages and I think it will be in our next life that these noble thoughts would have a place.

I have no idea on how to solved this dilemma. Hahaha Its much better not to have gold accessories, just sell it and put the money in savings. Its much better than getting robbed.

Hmmm..I guess its because of your tradition and belief. But you can always chose if you want it or not. Be simple and wear only what you need.

I prefer stones and pearls. :( Not a great fan of gold, or silver, or platinum..:( Scared? No...I wear a thin chain...and it is more of an emergency cash kind...worst come worst served, I would be able to use it for ... I bet no thief would spend time planning to steal that chain..it is anyway..18 carat..not 22 or 24 carat..lol

It is just a matter of setting a trend. If the trend setters opt for beads and pearls so be it.

Hi, You are right. There is no point in keeping gold in lockers anyway if one cannot wear it. The price of gold increasing day by day. But there is no decrease in demand of gold. It is better to wear artificial ornaments. If we have gold in our house we always afraid of robbery. So we can not live peacefully. What is the use of such thing which disturbs our mental peace?

The sad part is if the rich wear artificial gold then it is still believed to be real.

I have to agree with you, its value is very high right now and i have some friends who do keep their gold in safe places rather than use them. I don't own much gold, i have some earrings and a gold necklace but i also do not use it often as i am afraid i will loose them. Often times i wear silver earrings or necklaces which is a lot more safe lol.

But there is no hesitation in going for more gold. What is it that attracts people to amass gold if it helps no one. They say it is a saving for a rainy day but believe you me no one sells their gold and if they do it is kind of an indication that things are not going well for that family and they are looked down upon, Gold is a mystery!

As long as society worships gold specially in India it will continue to rule the lives of people. A bit of analysis will reveal the bitter truth that much of the money is blocked in this metal which these days cannot even be worn for fear of robbery. This money is not available in circulation. No one sells gold unless they are in dire need.

Gold is always skyrocketing. It is good for investment. buy some gold, keep it, and sell when the price is very high.

Hi, since i don't have much of gold, i neither worry of wearing them nor storing them. lol. With the high tech robberies in (including bank lockers) or the snatchers it not wise to invest our hard earned money in buying and storing gold, but you may opt to buy gold bonds as investments for the future.

It is so funny really. Displaying valuables is definitely an unwise thing to do but we see Indian women doing it all the time.

These people should come to Trinidad where there is a thriving trade in low value gold and a pawn business with huge profits for the purveyors.

Robbers have an eye on gold whether cheap or expensive. That is a menace here where we live as gold prices are soaring and they will stop at nothing to get what they want. A new thought needs to be put in place when it comes to investing money.

Hi ! Yes in the city where i lived , it often happened , anytime , any day and any place ! So scary but this is the truth ! One never safe wearing those golds , it were so attractive to bad man's eyes . It is better to be simple in going out than to be fully decorated with gold , you are just putting your life to danger. So best way here is to go out with a very low profile , let us be simple as we can be anyways they said Simplicity is beauty.

It is time people thought of investing their money elsewhere. Real Estate could be a good idea as no one can rob it!
