Police bribes real bad here......... now they got me.

Mexico

Police bribes have always been real bad here in Mexico. I really had never, seen it. I know some who have. Most for traffic stuff. But last night, I got the police bribe world right infront of me. About 10 pm a cop came into cafe, and asked my son for 3 coffees and a few candy items. My son put them in a bag and told him the total. They cop asked where is the owner. He told him my mom is inside house. He said please go and get her. So he did. I talked to the man, who said to me... You signed on home are in violation of the law, since this is a home. I told him I didnt know that. He said I can write you a ticket for 75.00 and make me take them down. I said please dont do that, he said well I guess Ill take this stuff and call it even. So I lost about 7.00. Better than 75.00. But some people. Hope he doesnt come back for more. I hate the police in Mexico.

The police always thinks that they have the supreme authority and taking advantage of the normal citizen. It is sad to see this thing happen everywhere!

This happens everywhere. I don't believe that there is a country in this world where there is no police abuse. If they would be better supervised these kind of things would not happen. They believe that they make the law and forget that they should apply the law, not invent it. It is just like the priests who forget that they are just a servant of God and they come to consider Gods themselves. This is how the police officer forget that they are supposed to protect the citizens and they become worse than a common thief.

Don't worry is happens in the usa also.Maybe that they prefer to not talk to much about this so that their image will not be affected. Or they are too good to be caught.

From what I gather, I think your cybercafe business is not registered and I think you can be easily either exploited by these corrupt cops or be taken to task by the relevant authorities like tax revenue department. Also, I am wondering if you need a license to operate a cybercafe in Mexico and if you do then I do not think you can obtain a license if you have not registered your business. Again, you are leaving yourself wide open to be in trouble with the law, legally speaking. I think it is important to start and run your business legally. It will save you a lot of future foreseeable trouble with the law, unnecessary loss of money to fines and get yourself fouled with the law. I hope that the cops in your area are merciful enough and would not consider implementing monthly protection fees from businesses like yours. In the meantime, I think you will need to keep a low profile about how much you make and if possible pay attention to your dressing which is the first giveaway sign. Try not to keep too much cash in the premises deposit your collections as frequently as possible into the bank. Remembering to use different routes and timings for the trips. At the same time, you may want to spend a small amount to check out what legalizing and registering your business entails. It pays if you are considering this venture on a long term.

hi maria, does it mean that aside from paying the registration fee and business permit, you still have to pay for a banner? How would prospective customers know the nature of your business if you won't put a banner? Paying for a business fee and permit logically should cover right to put signage for your business. However, cops of this kind always find means and ways to fill their pockets at the expense of hapless citizens.

It is reg. I have paid my business permit. The problem is they also want a fee to put banners or signs up here.

Well look it that way, if it was a honest cop ,he would have paid for the coffee but would have fined you along with shutting down your cafe.About corrupt cops i have seen very few people in my life who have not misused the power.

Its a game which is played everywhere, unfortunately.Legal or illegal i don't know, but full support to you, at-least you are earning honestly by working hard, not robbing people like that cop.

That is just ridiculous, and I guess noone will stand up to it. They seem to just do it to get what they want, here if an officer did that there would be reprucution, and even loss of job.

Well, as my brother said. The cop is right. i should not have the banner at my house. But every single home here with a business has one.

You are right, in a way it makes sense. But then the cop should be going to everyone's house.

There are bad people in this world in the form of police too. Bribery is everywhere. India leads in that. Police, politicians, most of them here is a corrupt official. That's too bad. That's why our country does not progress. Please take care and keep all documents ready to be at a safer side.

That is terrible, he is abusing his position as a police officer, that is absolutely disgusting, trouble is he might try it again as he got away with it, and they know that you can't do anything about it. On his wages you'd think he'd be able to afford the price of 3 coffees and a few candy items. What a nasty man!

There are bad police in every country and some of them are in my country too. Just make sure that you have your licence or whatever it is you need to get done. I have more police stories than anyone else in my country . Some funny, some good and some downright bad. Get legal. And never forget that in every police force all over the world there are good cops and bad cops.

I agree, I think this one just wanted something for free. Makes me sick. I dont make much money here. And some days 10.00 is alot. So him taking 7.00 does hurt me.

That is not cool for that to happen! I'm sure stuff like that happens around here, but I haven't had anything like that happen to me. Hopefully this cop doesn't come back as a repeat offender. It might be cheaper than the 'fines' but I have a feeling that he was making up the offense. $75.00 for $7.00 doesn't seem like a great trade off for him.

There are police bribes in my country too, but I haven't really seen one only in television. I do hope he doesn't come back to your shop. Your doing your best to earn a decent living, yet here he goes to get something for free by using his power/authority. Such a bad example for a cop.

there are good and bad cops all over the world. you had a close encounter with the bad last night. by the way, was there a basis for the fine? did you not get a permit for that sign board? if you haven't then i suggest you get one soonest so he will have no reason to pester you for more bribes in the future. have all your licenses and books always ready so the next time he comes back, he won't have a reason for asking for a bribe. otherwise he will keep on coming back... that's for sure.

That is horrible! I can't believe what they get away with. I must say I have heard stories and seen movies about how the police in Mexico are corrupt, but it's just different hearing about it first hand from someone it has happened to. Not cool at all.

Not only mexico, every part of world has good police and bad police, just like good people and bad people. My father is a police and a good one. Always pays when he eats in hotels/restaurants and never asks anyone money. Some of his friends laugh at him and says him you should have never joined police. They always advice my father about how they barely pays in hotels/restaurants under their area and drinks for free. Some businessmen also do illegal stuff with their protection by giving money. Just keep away from police whenever possible.

Perhaps you could relate it to your brother and get his help. This is something need to be settled once and for all otherwise they may take advantange of you

You should do some investigating of your own. The cop said you were in violation-the the cafe is actually a home, but you claim you didn't know. How long have you been operating? And how strange that the police waited that long to come after you. Corrupt police are so frustrating! Using their power to bully people-disgusting!!! Hope you get it straightened out!

I've encountered my share of crooked cops, and I think that your $7-cop isn't too, too bad. As long as he doesn't come back, and pester you for the same violation over and over again. Now, is there a way for you to not 'violate' the law? Can you get a special permit to operate your business there?

I hope he does not bother you anymore.
