Writing is Truly a Lifetime Thing

I've been writing or scribbling my entire life. And from the looks of it, it seems this activity is going to be a lifetime thing. But I think the whole writing process needs an upgrade. It seems too primitive. It hasn't really evolved into more sophisticated process. What I was doing years ago are still pretty much what I am doing today. I need a better writing process. I need something that says I'm a better writer today than I was yesterday. I think that the writing process should mature as we mature. It should not be a constant.

I am a little confused with your post bloggeroo..is it the whole writing process that needs sophistication or you as a writer? A process is a process and unless someone can find a flaw in that process, it isn't going to change for the next ten million years. I can only speak for myself and I can say that my writing technique when I was 10 years old is a lot more primitive than how I write now. As we get exposed to more types and forms of literary pieces, we somehow change how we express our thoughts. I could say that the writer changes but the process doesn't.

The writing process. I'm thinking like a programmer here. If the end-product of the writing process is a combination of words, then the process seems flawed. My most recent observation is on preparing test questionnaires and lesson plans while I was teaching last semester. It takes like half a day for me to prepare a questionnaire. As for writing a lesson plan, it takes so much effort and time. I know this may not be the kind of writing you have in mind. But these are the kind of stuff that are urgent and important that I should write.

You're right. I have a different kind of writing in mind. I teach ESL and the kind of writing I teach to my students is different. I share your feelings towards lesson plan preparation but I guess I look at the challenge in a different way as you because what I am thinking is that the problem is not within the process but with me. On the contrary, yes, it could be in the process of translating thoughts and ideas into words. It is how we communicate abstract ideas and make them concrete. Going back to your analogy of a programmer, don't you think the problem is not with the software itself but with the hardware? I really don't have a concrete idea on how to solve this but then I try not to pressure myself too much because it makes me less productive.

Actually, I am really a programmer and an engineer. And I'm working on my insights these past few months to come up with some kind of innovative solution to my problem with the writing process. And I need to publish several blogs as well.

I'm sort of confused....Do you mean the writing process as in prewriting, drafting, revising, final copy and publishing? Or do you mean writing style? I think you can customize the writing process based on your needs. That's what I do. Also, I think you can see if you've improved as a writer based on your output and the way you write. I mean, at first your skills will be limited. But later on you will learn to play with words, and you immediately know what sounds good and what doesn't, and you will learn to vary your tone and style and be more flexible. It does take a lot of time. More practice also means improved writing skills.

I mean the writing process. Style is not a problem because writers are only being required to comply to standards. And the standards are fairly known and predictable. But the writing process is quite unreliable even for experienced writers. To put it differently, take the practice of writing based on keywords. Now, this is a really good reader-centric or client-centric approach to writing. And it's fairly reliable. Give the assignment to ten different writers and you can expect fairly similar results. Frankly, I haven't read writing books with this practice/technique (of using keywords) added to the writing process. And to think, a lot of web content are being written this way.

. Well, most of them has cleared my confusion already. Constant practice and choice of topic to master would somehow upgrade your writing skill.

I think people need to write more, even though typing is used more often. I still have books from when I was little that I had wrote on the plain pages from a very young age. I too have always wrote things.

Doing things regularly will surely make us expert on a particular field and that is also applicable in writing. Our day to day experience can contribute to our knowledge which will be helpful to achieve a higher level. Have you checked the articles you have written before and were you able to compare those you have written these days? Aside from the topic, I think we can see improvement on the way we tackle things, the way we made our phrases and sentences. Have a wonderful day!

If you believe that, why don't you set about to change it? And what is a better writing process? I started writing at 12 and by the age of 55 I had written ten novels, a film script that evolved into a film, and hundreds of articles. Maybe it is not the writing that needs an upgrade, but the writers. I have no problems with the writing process being the way it is. What is wrong with it?

Writing process surely is not constant. It keeps getting more interesting as you gain experience in life. Every day teaches us new things, makes us interact with new people, exposes us to new inventions and innovations. All these in turn, opens our mind to newer avenues, which make us think and write a lot more better and about interesting topics. One needs to be well-read and well-informed on various topics to write well. Also, it is up to ourselves to make the writing seem interesting and certainly different from what we have been doing till now.

What you're actually looking for is something to reduce the effort you put into things: in writing, it works the other way around. A better process frequently involves MORE effort because it results in better output. But if you insist on trying to cut corners, buy Dragon Naturally Speaking. That's about the only "upgrade" available for the writing process in the way you mean.

The role of a writer is not to say what we all can say, but what we are unable to say. And by the way, everything in life is writable about if you have the outgoing guts to do it, and the imagination to improvise. I love writing. I love the swirl and swing of words as they tangle with human emotions.

Hi,I"m fond of writing.Personally,I think if we are just want to record our daily life or our thoughts,we can use any words we like. But,if we want to be more professional, lively,or interesting,it's no matter with the time you are writing is how long. The most important is the way you write them.Maybe you can read some books which is write well or famous, and when you are writing, you can try to use those kinds of words, and thinking over and over again, consider how to formulated sentences. Then, you will get improve.(Besides,I'm a Chinese, and my English is bad,so,there must have some error, please forgive me.I'm a new lotter.Smile)
