Good Weekend :-)

Is This A Spider Plant? - New Plant Bought From Dobbies

We've been out and about this weekend as the weather hasn't been too bad (certainly warmer) and the rain hasn't been as heavy as elsewhere in the country, so I guess we've been lucky in that respect. The main thing we did today was visit Dobbies Nursery as I needed a replacement for my Boston Fern that - sadly - died on me. Below is a pic of the new plant I bought. No idea what it is but I like it.

Nope! Not a spider plant. It's some kind of dracena, but don't ask me which variety.

There's over 40 different varieties. Too bad Dobbies isn't more helpful.

The staff all look the part in their pink fleece tops but that's about it.

Good for you !The weather has stayed fine lately. Here, although it is spring time, the temperature reaches a maximum of 30? today.Judging from the picture,it looks like spider plant,http://hortchat.com/info/spider-plant,however yours looks as if it has serrated leaf margin, mine hasn't.

The leaves are smooth my friend, no serrated edges. None of your links ever work for me. So sad about that.

That is to say,its leaf is entire. There is no doubt that it is the spider plant.

Lets hope the warmer weather continues, yesterday I was out in the garden and it was ideal, the sun was out but there was a cool breeze, hopefully this will signal the right time to plant my veggies at long last! Have you named your new plant? I hope it flourishes my friend and you have better luck with it

I could name it I suppose but I'm resisting at the moment lol. John took the Sweet Peas to his Dad's (he used to grow them for shows so he knows a thing or two about them) and he's planted them in our trough, which is now outside. My plan is for the Sweet Peas to grow up the front of the shed, thereby hiding it. Hopefully, I'll be able to see them (if they grow high enough) from my vantage point at the sink lol. I'm also hoping that, once it gets colder (again) for the weekend then they won't die off. I never trust Paul Mooney, our local weatherman as Carlisle is actually protected from the Pennines from much of the nasty weather he keeps banging on about..so the rain he keeps mentioning we haven't had!

I looked at your picture and it does look to be a spider plant. They are pretty easy to grow. They look good on tall stands or hanging so the "babies" can dangle all around. Let it get root bound to make it grow flowers and plantlets. You will enjoy it.

Mum had a spider plant many, many years ago and what I remember about it were the thin leaves. I guess there are varieties with thicker leaves like the one I have? How often would you water it?

I would water it when the soil is dry, but not pulling away from the pot. It may have thicker leaves because it has been pampered a lot.

I think you need to make your next plant one of the artificial or plastic variety. They never die. They don't live either but that's beside the point. They are also easier to keep clean with a good swish around in the dish water and voila! Nice and bright again. No need to water either.

I saw some amazing flowers in Dobbies, the Nursery we visited. I should've taken photographs of them as there's no way I could grow them here as they'd probably die on me (outside) but the colours were dark purple and bight yellow..together on one flower. Gorgeous!

I have seen those plants before Janey. It has the same markings as Mother-in-law's Tongue. But I am not expert. _Derek

Oh no, MIL's tongue? I hope my own MIL never gets to see it, otherwise it might die on me!

Hopefully, you have more luck with this plant than you did with your Boston fern. I know what it is like to have plants not survive one's care. I am not one to be accused of possessing a green thumb.

Glad that you had a good weekend. Too bad about your Boston Fern (I am assuming that is a plant as well?) but hopefully perhaps this one will last a little longer. I definitely do not have a green thumb, as all of my plants seem to die on me. Ha ha! Here in Minnesota it snowed over the weekend - quite sick of this winter!

Snow is annoying, I must say. March was very cold here..in fact the coldest March for about 50 years or something. Yes, a Boston Fern is a plant. The ones in Dobbies were a damn sight healthier than the one I killed off, I can tell you that much!

So, how was your plant shopping? I am really not a plant lover, but I grew up with a garden . I just don't know why I never had any interest in planting.

I do have the odd shrub that flowers and my Hot Lips of course lol. Those I have in my raised flower bed, but I refuse to grow high maintenance flowers, the ones that need a lot of sun..as we only get the sun at an angle on certain parts of the bed, and that's from about 2pm until 5pm, something like that. Our shed tends to get in the way too which is why I'm going to grow Sweet Peas up the front of it.

It looks very nice. My houseplants don't last long, they always die quite quickly, though I have got one that has survived for a surprisingly long time in the kitchen at the moment, inspite of me. I don't think that is a spider plant as the leaves in the photo don't look long and thin enough, but bearing in mind how bad I am at looking after houseplants I wouldn't take my opinion on this too seriously.

It's annoying that it doesn't say on the card what the plant is. Dobbies are assuming we know everything there is to know about plants BEFORE we go in, not realising not everyone are experts, including me.
