A Gold Shirt

I've just been reading on the news about an Indian man who has had a real gold shirt made worth £250,000 (that's about 383,000 US dollars). He can only wear it when accompanied by a security guard. Here's the story, with a photo of the shirt (which is pretty damned horrid if you ask me!) - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-21994873 What are your feelings about a shirt worth £250,000? Disgust, as that money could have been used for something more useful? Or is it just a bit of fun and no worse than spending the money on anything else? Perhaps you think, as he does, that it's a sensible investment. Do you collect gold? Or would you if you could?

while it is true it he can do anything with his hard earned money, i find his flaunting his wealth terribly disgusting. i also have a few gold jewelries. some i've bought as souvenirs from transactions, others given to me by my loved ones. however, i don't make it a point of wearing these always. with the gold prices going up, this is a good investment. during the times that i badly need money, i pawn my jewelry rather than ask for a loan from persons.

The poster above cslled it vulgar, and I think that's a great description.

It's got to be awfully heavy. I think if I were a billionaire, I still wouldn't do this.

I'm imagining I could find a few more useful things to spend my money on too. Be nice to find out!

Perhaps some should write to him requesting that shirt.

Even if you couldn't, I can think of plenty of organizations that would love a donation.

Well, it employed 16 people 15 days to make it, and probably had to have security then as well. It also gives a security guard a job when it goes out. So, while it looks like just a shiny short sleeved shirt, it's actually a source of employment.

That's a positive spin on it.

I wish I had collected gold. Then I would have something to sell right now that doesn't mean much to me. My husband had to turn a retirement account to pay for all the expenses my illness has incurred. It seems like he's showing off because he can. If the shirt were put in a place where people could pay a little bit of $ to see it and the $ for viewing went to a charity, I'd be more likely to think better of it.

He's certainly showing off. But when he's wearing I bet noone remembers his face because they've all been staring, gobsmacked, at the shirt.

Many in India have lot of money, they buy gold, silver, gem stones etc, they sell at higher price usually. Yes i buy gold too.

So gold and other precious metals and stones are bought as an investment quite commonly?

The man has the right how he spend his money. If he wants a gold shirt or a gold teeth, he can buy it as long as he uses his own money. I know someone who owns a gold shoe. And there is also a gold cellphone. So it is not really new. And gold is a very good investment since it does not depreciate.

You're right, he does. It just seems rather vulgar. What would anyone do with a gold shoe? Do they wear them?

His life story is from rags to riches. It's his lifelong dream to wear a golden shoe. Now he have the capacity to avail it, so he bought one. Custom made, and yes, he wears them.

What an utter and total waste of money. This man is obviously crazy, with all the starving people in the world, surely he could have donated the money to a worthy cause that this? It looks utterly distasteful and quite hideous actually!

It's vile, isn't it?! I was asking myself if I'd feel the same way had he spent that money on a sports car or a more traditional item of jewellery like a watch. To be honest, I don't think I'd be so horrified, and weirdly, I can't work out why the shirt makes me feel so revolted.

Not Indian gold anyway. It's that horrid, cheap looking bright yellow stuff that looks really tinny. Of course he's entitled to spend how he likes but I deplore the way he made his money and as I read through the story about the expense involved all I could think about were the children of the slums in India and their families.

Ditto here. I was wondering if I would feel so negative towards the man had he chosen to spend his money on something else. A flashy car is equally superfluous for instance, but I don't think it would put my hackles up in the same way.

I don't think the shirt looks that bad, but I don't think I could wear anything like that. It seems like it would be miserable to wear, heavy and probably hot. I really don't think it's disgusting, I say "to each, his own." If he has the money to have a shirt like that made, somewhere to wear it and the money to pay for security, then go for it! If I had one, I would probably lock it up forever!

It's not really the most practical item in his wardrobe I guess. Imagine having to take a security guard with you each time you wore something!

I had heard about this guy when I was in Pune in December. Incidentally this person also lives somewhere in or near Pune. Those who have seen this shirt being worn say it looks too gawdy and not something one would like wearing.

It looks hideous! And really not very practical.

I find this act to be both pretentious and actually a very low class thing to do. How egoistical of him? How can a person in a country that has so mnay impoverished people justify this crass act of vulgarity? Words fail me
@GreenMoo (11834)

It would be interesting to hear from someone else from the same country, but I suspect it would not be seen as so vulgar there. Which is strange, in a country where the gap between rich and poor is so obvious.

I think I'd hurt my neck or my back if I had to wear that shirt! Most of the time, when I get a new shirt, I couldn't wait to wear it and walk around attracting attention and compliments on how good it looks. I think if I wore this gold shirt I'd attract the wrong kind of attention. Even if I had security guards with me. The only gold I have with me is the necklace my mom gave me when I was in high school which I never take off, even now.

I've got a couple of bits of jewellery, but none of them are worth diddly squat really. I think that guy has the wrong idea if he wants people to look at him when he's out in his flashy shirt. I bet no-one can remember his face as they've been all staring at the shirt instead!

I think that is vile!!! That any human being could waste that amount of money on something so stupid and ridiculous is beyond me. I know myself that I struggle when it comes to money. I can afford my rent, my phone bill, my food, my debts.. but other than if my partner earns a little extra cash (because I am on a set salary and cannot earn overtime etc) I can never really buy myself new things. We have had to save to get new tiles in our kitchen which is important as we have concrete at the minute because our washing machine leaked and ruined our vinyl flooring, and there that idiot is running about like that? It's horrible! There are children dying of hunger or incorrect medical care in the world, and us hard working citizens are parting with money we bloody need, and giving it to children in need and other charity organisations to try and help them.. and that muppet is running about like that? He needs lynched!

I understand how you feel! However, if he had spent £250,000 on a car or on a house (that he didn't live in), would you feel the same way? I'm not sure I would feel so strongly, and it's weird as a £250,000 car is just as over the top and a house is a waste unless someone lives there.

If I could collect gold as an investment I would want it to be in coins. Right now gold is losing its value against the dollar I just heard on TV. This is a financial fact that does not make any sense. I like the pretty clothes the women of India wear, and would not want a gold shirt.

The advantage of gold is that it is a physical item that will still be here if the world's computers all crash I suppose.

It just boggles the mind... I would think it would be uncomfortable to wear, besides being heavy. They at least lined it with velvet, but that would only make it heavier, I think.

Of all the things to make of gold, a shirt does seem a peculiar choice.

Yeah. Would you have felt the same had it been something less ostentatious he's splashed his cash on though? I can't say I would feel it quite so disgusting, and I can't quite pin down why.

There is no need for having such a shirt.i think you should enjoy your wealth without any fear.he is in doubt thats why he has security.that money is enough to feed some orphans in a camp in africa.i wish the rich had the guts to help, this world would be like heaven

hey friend . . what is wrong in it. he has money so he is investing it. investing in gold is really a good investment as gold price are rising since many years :) moreover he has gained popularity which has increased the cost of the shirt even more. . isnt it cool!
@GreenMoo (11834)

I'm not sure he's gained much popularity. I think that people will remember the shirt and not the man.
