DMP Woes

Our DMP was supposed to have been paid off effective 3/21/13. So when our payment came out last month I celebrated the fact that we were done with it. However, I was apparently wrong because they withdrew from our checking account again this month and when Tom called them to find out about it, they had somehow figured that we had two more payments to make, despite the fact that my paperwork does say that successful completion occurred last month. This really stinks because that was money that we were counting on to pay other bills that are now going to have to wait a little bit longer. They told him on the phone that their estimates say that completion will be in 790 more dollars, so about 300 dollars after the payment that was drawn today. It is really making me angry. However, I'll be able to get through it and we will be fine. I just hate the fact that we have to struggle for another month before things are really going to get better for our family.

There always seems to be added interest and other fees. Atleast you will finish up with it soon.

That is true and we are definitely over the hump with it. I just can't wait for it to be all over (like I thought it was last month).

Well, it will soon be. I still have 25 more payments on a loan I thought I'd have paid long ago. It just goes on and on.

I would argue with them if you have signed paperwork.

I do have the signed paperwork. However, I also have to admit that there was a part of the contract that we failed with (sending them statements every three months) when Tom got sick. So I'm trying to gather all of the statements I have here to see what we can do.

Yep, I could choose to look at the fact that things didn't go as planned, but instead I'm going to look forward knowing that soon our only debt will be our house.

Your cheque statements should tell you exactly what you have paid on your DMP (whatever that is). If you signed a contract, it should say exactly what you owe. Compare the two. If they are correct and you still owe, you will continue paying, but if you are correct, you should show them that you have made all your payments and stop them from taking any more funds from your account. Don't just assume they are right.

Right now, I'm in a waiting mode because I need to look at the credit card statements and see what they say to determine where we actually are.

This happened to me too as when I went I made my last payment I thought that it was now completed. But no, closing costs and other things so it worked out to be abut another US$700 But it is done so I so not have any bills to pay now

Even though we did have to make an unexpected payment, we are so close to done that I can taste it and also we have learned to live in a different way as a result of being enrolled in the DMP.

Oh no! How could they do that? That does stink that it was on paper that you guys had a successful completion . . . just why does it say that if that's not true . . . what did they say about that? Well, I do remember my DMP counselor telling me I could get rid of my debt in just a couple years . . . but in reality it was more like 3 and a half years. That's good you will get through it just fine - but still - they teach us to plan our finances - and for them to throw in a wrench like that was not cool (since they are supposed to help us with it).

That is exactly why I'm upset. I planned my life around the 3/21 completion date and we were going to celebrate with a treat for the family that we've been sacrificing for three and a half years (ironically). Now this surprise for our children is going to have to wait until after they are out of school for the summer.

That is true and I can also look forward to the fact that we will never again be in credit card debt.

hi Dorannnmwin Oh that stinks and how did thy justify that your paper work said it was over on 3/21/13?Any way I hope you and your family will be okay having to do more payments like that.On a lot smaller scale I was happy that even after paying my bills I would have more left then I get a surprise bill from my copay on last month's meds of ten dollars and 22 cents so of course I made out a check and will mail them in the morning. I do keep up with my payments bu t I have an ambulance bill I have to pay in 25 dollar payments each month,.I was going to renew my diabetes forecast magazine but it will have to wait for awhile now.

If it does end up that we have more of a struggle than I think we will, I know that I have family that will help us out. It could have been devastating to us but with our new mortgage, the first payment isn't due until May so we at least did have that money that wasn't going out this month.

So, are they right in saying that you still have additional payments to do? Or for them to withdraw? Sometimes, there are companies who wouldn't advice the bank when to stop the payment or debit process. They leave it to the client to make sure that they are right. And then they hassle you in dealing with the bank.

To deal with debts is really annoying and a lot of people have debts including myself. Sometimes we can not avoid to receive a loan because we need the money for different purposes, that will suddenly appear. The worst thing is the pressure made by the borrowers. We have to watch carefully our debts and not go beyond our possibilities.
