We can always learn something

I have always been one to open myself to other cultures and not be quick to judge. But I have also become aware that media, news, and opinions sometimes cause us to stereotype a culture, or even a situation. I would like to share what I have learned in one short month on my own. last month I went to pay the cable bill. In this shopping center there was an Islamic Learning Institute. I have ALWAYS been curious. I walked back and this office was open. I walked in and was greeted by a very sweet lady who was in her cultural dress. We chatted and I brought home some brochures so I could learn more. I mean what more could I learn since I was already sterotyped to think a certain way right? I brought the brochures home and started to learn about Islam. I learned more in those small brochures than anyone here in the US has ever taken the time to tell me. Last week I spent 3 hours again with a gentleman that set up an appt to meet with me. he was beyond kind! He answered questions openly and very honestly. When I came home, I told my husband that knowing how the people are, that when we hear the word muslim, we should not assume what we group that meaning to be. Such as terrorist, killing, alqida (sp) etc. I said I learned once again, that you cannot group a whole culture because of a few bad people. I learned admiration and trust of this culture. He was I looked into his eyes. I could tell the pride of his home, and culture and his beliefs. I am so glad I took the time to spend to learn about them, their religion and beliefs. What blew me away even more, was he handed me a brochure because they set up a medical clinic next door and it was free to anyone that needs a doctor and does not have insurance. I had no idea they were there. He said they have been open a year and have seen over 1000 people. I find this incrediable when you seldom hear anything good in the news media about them that they are a gentle people with a kind heart and extend out to others. Brought back my memories of my first job when I worked with the Carmelite Nuns. they were equally kind and loving within their religion. I was doubly blessed to learn what I have, and that there are still genuine people who care for others expecting nothing in return. Bless all who read this and remember if we do not close our minds but open it and our hearts, what we can learn about others is truly amazing!

That is very true! Instead of viewing people according to the stereotypes that we have grown up with, we should try and understand different cultures. I guess being afraid of anything different has a lot to do with it. Even in the bombings in Boston, the first thing people thought of (myself included) was it must be a terrorist attack. After 9/11, a lot of people thought any muslim must be a terrorist. Of course that's not true. There are good and bad in any culture.

You have a very wonderful post. Judging easily is what people do even without knowing the real character of a person. I am guilty of that. Sometimes, I just cannot take away thinking bad things against other people because that is what others think of. Now, I have realized I must stop thinking negative things against other people. There is a golden rule that we can apply on this: "Do not do unto others what you do not want others do unto you."

Well, that is always truth. They might be the few individuals who never harm a fly in their lives, and they try to live peacefully and isolated from all other violence. We can't never judge people are to be evil because a few bad ones existed. We have to play fair game to other people too, and try to put yourself in their shoes, what would that mean if other people judge you unfairly.
