E-books and audio books vs. printed publication

Are you fond of reading? Are you updated to the latest technology built for readers like you? I admit that I don’t read books like it was showed yesterday or will be showing tomorrow because, for me, it’s just a waste of time. But reading books like almanac, encyclopedia, etc… is great. Let’s move to our main discussion, buying printed books is a waste of money rather than downloading them online, right? Downloading your favorite books online can save trees. But, how come that many people are still buying printed publications than reading their favorite books on their laptops, cell phones and/or computers? Have you ever reflected these questions to yourself? Which is better between them and why?

Online reading is good. But, I still buy printed books. Because printed books are just printed books. Its boring reading online, a lot. Plus, some books/magazines are yet not available online. Reading online can save trees, but it also creates a lot of pollution, using a lot of electricity. Believe me, whatever you do online, you create a lot of pollution. Everything online uses electricity, from servers to your pc/cell phones etc. They uses a huge electricity.

I love reading but I really prefer reading a physical book over ebooks. The essence of reading, for me, lies in the thrill of having to turn the page one by one and hold your breathe while you read each lines. Also, the smell of paper is simply intoxicating! Although, I read some publications in ebook but for some works like Sheldon and Anne Rice and Griffin, I prefer to have them in paperback.

I can see your point and you do have some valid issues there. But I guess it also happens to rely a lot to a person's preferences. Some people still prefer the feel of having an actual physical book. It can be some collector's item, plus an actual physical book can be re-sell after you have finished with it and you have no desire to keep it. While it saves some trees, the ebook readers in turn use up a lot of energy cumulatively and this in turn can also put a strain on a different resource. Also, some people don't necessarily have the financial capability to upgrade themselves to these gadgets.

I still prefer old school printed publications, I am fond of highlighting words, phrase or sentence that is inspiring and I usually fold or do something from the pages that I like which I can't do from ebooks and audio books and I'm feeling better and comfortable reading hard copy and bring it anywhere with me and done anytime, though it can be done in ebooks but our place here is not that safe there's snatcher or others that the tablet or laptop maybe in danger if always with me in public place

To me, it really depends on what read. I read news online, but if I want to read a novel or things profound, I usually buy the printed ones. I suppose there are certain things that can't be downloaded, the feeling of holding a book in your hands in a sunny afternoon and turning the pages. They are like homemade cakes, smelling better and tasting better. After I finish a book I like and put it back on shelf,I usually have a stong sense of achievement. And, it's very convenient to read the parts you like again at anytime. So I enjoy reading printed books much more.

Hi Marsh1elle! :) I love reading so much and though we already have the e-books and audiobooks that we can actually have for free most of the time, I'm still comfortable reading printed publications. I'm working almost 1pm-10pm in front of a computer and can read ebooks as much as I want to... but I'm not comfortable. Am I being too traditional? Hahaha! Well, I like highlighting lines and quotations that I love and sometimes, I write some notes on the pages of the book itself. :)

Hi there Marsh1elle! I love reading. As for the latest technology for readers, I may not be as updated but the latest thing that I have heard of is that we can use android phones to read e-books. I read a lot, every day and it is one of my favorite hobbies. Before, I collect books but I decided to give it up because it is a waste of space, and we do not have a big house, and I have read the books anyway. I still buy books although I rarely buy brand new ones. I usually but used books from book sales. I have tried reading an e-book using my laptop. It is Breaking Dawn of the Twilight Saga and I read the e-book because in the province where we live that time, we do not have a decent bookstore. I just buy books online. It was okay, though although it is hard to concentrate on reading when I am on the internet because I usually end up doing other things especially when there is internet connection. I like the thought of reading using my mobile phone though. It will be convenient. I just hope it will not use up much battery power.

I do realize how much we could save from having it the modern way. However, reading books online could be a lot straining to the eyes, don't you think?

Each have their perks for sure. If I am doing a bit of walking or using public transit I always listen to audiobooks or podcasts instead of music. I find sometimes even sitting on the bus I'll listen to an audiobook instead of reading because I am not carrying a bag or wearing a backpack so it is a pain to carry around. A book is something I usually read at home or if I am carrying a bag with other items I need. So in a way, both have their own place where they are more convenient to the listener/reader.

Yeah....it's a good idea to read books online instead of buying the printed ones which consumes money and need to chop off the trees as well. But, we have been brought up by reading the printed books and habit won't die that easily. Reading printed books is definitely a joy and pleasure which you cannot get on reading the e-books.As you said, it's waste of money in buying the printed books, even though you read the e-books you require electricity which you won't get at free of cost. It purely depends on individual's choice. May be the next generation after 10-15 years hardly see the printed stuff.
