Yes, I know, shocking right? But it's true.. we'll be adding on to our family very soon. Another addition to our clan.. and everyone here is so excited!! We're getting a dog!! Yep.. we went out today and visited a couple of local shelters.. and then we found Turbo! He's a 6 month old baby.. not sure exactly what breed he is. I honestly can't even guess at what breed he might be.. not close enough to resemble anything.. but it doesn't matter. He's full of energy, loves to run and play. We visited with him for probably half an hour, they brought him out of his cage and let him run around with us.. and that's all he did was run and run and run! The kids are so excited, they can't wait for Turbo to come home with us. There's a few things to go through before he can come home. First they're testing to make sure he's okay to be around cats. Then they have to check with our vet to make sure we're good pet parents, which that should be fine because all of my cats have been in for a check up recently.. November I think. Then I have to get him licensed and I can bring him home. The kids are really hoping he'll come home tomorrow.. I'm thinking maybe Monday or Tuesday at the latest. On our way home from the shelter we stopped and got all the stuff we'll need when we bring Turbo home.. so I really hope everything works out, but I don't see why it wouldn't. Have you ever adopted a pet from a shelter?

Yes, I have, although it's been a quite a few years since I've done so. I hope the adoption goes through without a hitch, so that you can take Turbo home where he belongs! Good luck!

Thanks! If it doesn't go through I'm going to have 5 heartbroken children on my hands! My oldest didn't even come with us but he's already in love with the dog just from the pic and what we told him about it.

Uh oh! That's the last thing you need! All the more reason for it to go smoothly!

I know! But we have a couple of back up plans if we don't end up with Turbo, but we've really got our hearts set on him!

Thats really exciting news!! I love dogs and have three of my own! Turbo sounds like a lot of fun and it is really good that you are adopting him from a shelter! How does it work for you guys over there in the US with the licence? Over here in the UK, we buy a dog and just take them home so we don't have to have anything to say he is ours as such. Of course a responsible pet owner registers their pets with a vet and goes for injections and keeps them up yearly and they get them chipped which means they can be tracked if found by the chip telling them who the owner is; is it similiar to the chip having a licence?

Nope, chip and license are 2 different things. The dog will be chipped.. they do that at the shelter and the shelter covers the cost for 1 year. In my state dogs HAVE to be licensed. That's just a registration with the town hall saying who the dog is, that it belongs to me, the address, and that he's up to date on his rabies shots. I have to renew this license yearly so he has to stay up to date on rabies shots. It cost me $17 because he's not neutered, but once he is it will only cost me $8 per year to keep him licensed, and that is required.

Thats good; so it is a reasonable charge but, at least responsible dog owners will also pay it.

Window buddies - These are my two rescued dachshunds. Lucy is the smaller dapple on the left (1.5 years old) and Charlie is a tweenie (not quite big enough to be a standard dachshund and too big to be classified as a mini) - not sure of his exact age because he was picked up as a stray... best guess is that he is around 3 years old. They're wonderful dogs. Very intelligent, active and loving. If you're looking for a great pet, please adopt, don't shop! :))
Awwww Turbo's an awesome looking dog! I'm sure it'll work out great and you'll have him home soon Your house will be really busy with a puppy in the mix! Yes, I've adopted two dogs now from the same rescue. I got Charlie, my dachshund, in May 2011. He was found running the streets, was underweight and had anxiety issues. I saw his photo on the rescue's website and I swear his eyes just reached right into my heart, like "I really need you." I had gone 7 years without a dog in the house and hadn't felt ready to get another one... until I saw Charlie He's doing really well, too! Still has some anxiety but probably always will... and that's ok... he's got all the love he can handle now LOL This March, I got an email from one of the admins at the rescue asking if there was any chance I'd be interested in a playmate for Charlie. I hadn't even been looking but they had a mini-dachshund named Lucy who was an owner surrender (they had no time for her, they said). I asked a ton of questions and was thinking that, yes, it might be time to get another. Then, they sent me her photo and my heart melted again! LOL She's a dapple dachshund (which people also call a merle) so she isn't the usual brown or black and tan. People see her and ask me what kind of dog she is because her coloring is rather unexpected. She's a bundle of joy -- and energy! She eats as much as Charlie and she's only 9.6 pounds. I didn't change her name either because it seemed to me that Charlie and Lucy were meant to be (a la Charlie Brown and the Peanuts ). Best of luck on the adoption! It's something I really, really believe in :)) Attaching a photo of my two doing one of their favorite things lately ;)

What a nice story! I'm glad Charlie and Lucy found each other, and you! I am really really hoping to be able to bring Turbo home today! I don't think we can wait the whole weekend to get him! We're so excited!

He looks so happy and friendly and I am sure that he will receive both love and care in your home. Dogs can teach so much to children can't they? No, I've never adopted a pet from a shelter but we had around eight dogs on the farm and one of them was the house dog - mine - usually a german shepherd. I think he may have a bit of retriever in him. I was thinking a bit of labrador but hs ace is too pointed. He is so special and may he be around for years to come. I suggest that you take out pet insurance thoughFriends tell me that it is worth it.

I will look into the insurance. They say he's a lab/pitbull mix, but I'm not too sure. Maybe we'll see more when he's older.

I know you're doing the right thing to adopt from a shelter! We are going to adopt a dog, but we have to wait a while. We have allergies so we will wait for a hypoallergenic dog. We're planning to adopt a female (unless we really fall in love with a male) :) From all I have seen recently about how full shelters are and how loving dogs from shelters usually are, I think this is the way to go for us too. We will probably have to wait longer to find the right one because of the hypoallergenic factor, but I'm sure the wait will be worth it. Very best of luck with your new dog, Turbo!

I have gotten both cats I have ever owned from people I knew. I have never gone to a shelter, but it sounds like a good route to go when looking for a pet. I hope that Turbo will be ok around your cats and that the transition into your house goes smoothly.

I really think he'll be okay with cats.. he was just very playful but not at all aggressive. He had a toy in his mouth, and we each took turns taking it away from him to make sure he wouldn't growl or snap.. and he didn't. I stuck my fingers in his mouth to make sure he wouldn't try to bite me, and he didn't. He did jump up on Mathieu a few times.. and he's probably about as big as Mathieu is.. but Mathieu thought it was funny.. and of course we can train the dog not to jump and he'll calm down as he gets older. He just needs some exercise and he's stuck in a cage all day!

Turbo is such a cute fella! We have adopted from our local animal shelter. Sandy is a part of our family. She certainly keeps us busy. Good luck with all of your plans and bless you for adopting!

We went to the Humane Society first and I wanted to take everyone home with me.. all the cats and most of the dogs.. but since I'm new to having dogs, we had to be very picky. I needed one very young so I could raise it myself and trust it completely.. and this one seems so loving already.. although mostly he just wanted to play! I can't wait to get him home and let him run around for awhile and then see how sweet he really is after he's had time to play!

Hi Kats! Wow, I am sure the whole family is now excited to have your new member. I sure love dogs, they are so charming and loving. I got three in the house so I think I could not afford to add one more. I wish I could.
