Bicol Region , specifically in the province of Albay , where i live here in the Philippines is well known all over the world for its perfect cone. It is an active volcano that erupts every ten years or lesser. When you look at it, it looks beautiful and serene. Yet. Its beauty is dangerous the moment it erupts. And when it erupts , it affects the neighboring towns at its foot. The last time it erupts was somewhere in May 2008. It wasn’t very strong and there wasn’t many damages. It was beautiful as it spews lava when you look at it at night. Beautiful , but dangerous. On November 30, of the same year, typhoon Reming hit the country. There were flash floods specifically in the first & second districts of the Bicol Region. Torrents of rain rushed down the slopes of Mayon Volcano , bringing with it tons of big rocks that were deposited at its foot when it erupted. Thus, these rocks and lava debris were washed down into some of its towns . Lots of bridges and houses even concrete ones were washed out too as the flash flood passed by them. More than 300,000 people were drowned and were dead. It was one of the most devastating & saddest time in the Bicol Region. From : my posts at Bubblews ; rebel_woman06

PhilVocs warn the people though . But some would be so hardheaded to follow their warning .

Yes, volcanoes can be dangerous and so sad that so many were killed. , but I recently learned the activity of volcanoes can be predicted too. Though buildings would be destroyed, it is good that people (who are irreplaceable unlike material things) can prepare for a disaster.

Indeed it is predictitable . We have a goverment agency Phil. Vocs That monitors the activities of all volcanoes in each province . They warn the people to evacuate if they are doing some works in the volcano to evacuate at once when there is a volcanic activities .

@Carmelanirel2 That's what modern technology gives us . They can predict , thus warn the people living near it .

@SIMPLYD See I didn't know that, I thought volcanoes just went off without warning or limited warning. I don't live in an area with volcanoes, but I am taking Geology this semester and it just so happen that the instructor was talking about Mount St. Helen and how the people were warned before it erupted.

I have always thought Volcanoes were neat. But, like anything in nature, it can be quite destructive. That is a lot of people to lose their lives. Very sad. I can't even imagine.

Good if it is a dormant volcano . It would be of no danger . But with an active one like this , you never know . Though there are geologists who monitors the its activity and warns the people when it seemingly have an overactive activity .

It does look beautiful. But i am wondering why would anyone want to build houses there? I mean why are there towns around that thing? That should be a tourist park not a resident area.
@SIMPLYD (90727)

Actually the town around it are not so near to it . It's just that months after it erupted , there came a strong typhoon bringing lots of rains . This caused a flash flood from the volcano bringing down the boulders and molten lavas and other debris then it overflowed the rivers causing the houses near the rivers to be damaged and drowning lots of residents .

Actually there is a certain parameter for it to be called the danger zone . Farmers grow veggies there on the slope of the volcano since plants there are healthy . There is a bureau that monitors the activity of the volcano and warns the people not to go to the danger zone when it has activities like sulfuric ashes coming out and eruption .

Yes indeed . Those killed were those whose place were run down by the flash flood caused by those lavas and boulders that rolled down the volcano.

I have always been sacred of volcanoes and think who live near them are very brave. But we don't really have much choice do we unless we leave our countries?

You are right about volcanoes and yet they are a tourists attraction. I remember people going to see the flood ravaged areas. For them it was a part of sightseeing

Precisely . Many tourists flocked after the eruption to have photos taken of the extent of damages . But as you can see in the photo , it is so beautiful to look at from afar with those lavas flowing down the volcano.

The earth has a different time clock than we do. We look at the seconds, minutes and hours. It lives a tad slower. Sometimes I just need to vent.

Hi SimplyD Each time I read about volcanoes, I feel scared thinking about how the life of people around would be... and how stong they would be in terms of will power and the determination to survive. I know I might never make it but seeing the attached pic, I do feel that I should get a glimpse of such marvel of nature at least once.

Well sids, it is indeed scary. That's why PhilVocs , the bureau who monitors the activity of the volcano , would warn if there is danger that it might erupt. People who are near the foot of Mayon are advised to evacuate. Thus, a lot of lives is saved. That one is eruption on a mild scale.

@SIMPLYD Great that you suggested me back here. I watched the movie Pompeii during the time we were away from MyLot. And that gives me some insight on how people live in such instances. Though this one was not a perfect movie, still, there was some material. I also watched some more on Youtube - and loved one Named - Krakatoa The Last Days - This was one of the best based on some stories from survivors. Gives you a much better insight
