Why cant i use LAN, only WLAN?

Why cant i use LAN, only WLAN? I musing an HP Laptop, it has wirlessLAN feature. My WLAN is quite slow, so i decided to buy cable and set up LAN which is faster. It has been working for the last week... today suddenly i cant use my LAN... I have to turn on my WLAN beore i can use LAN, most of the times i cant even use any, no internet... Please help me, tell me exactly what to do , im a newb in PC's ^^ I tried: -Disabling The Wireless -Networking
