THE entrance, done up in granite stones and mud coloured walls with small cut outs sporting lighting fixtures, gives Vythiri Resort a fort like appearance. Inside, however, it’s nature that is the focus. The logo, a large fern leaf, could not have been more appropriate. It sums up the philosophy of this resort, tucked amidst 150 acres of coffee and pepper plantations, adjoining a reserve forest in the Wayanad region. A wooden pathway across a water body leads to the reception where tiled roofs, terracotta floors and wooden pillars make up the décor. An open veranda leading off from here forms the lounge and a cleaved trunk of a tree lying horizontal on the floor forms an interesting seating area. The water body, that extends to partly surround the lounge, has multihued fish gliding languidly around lotus flowers. After you have had your fill of such fascinating sights, take the winding pathway that meanders towards the various cottages. Accommodation comes in three categories Kudeeram cottages with private balconies facing the gurgling stream, Paadi rooms with private plunge pools (the original dwellings of plantation workers called Paadi enlarged and refurbished), and four deluxe rooms in a block – Two on the ground floor and two on the first. Each is a spacious room with a veranda that has a beautiful view of the natural pool in the resort. The serena Spa in the resort in an international spa. A long wooden bridge hanging from steel ropes spans a narrow gorge across with lies the restaurant, activities room and swimming pool. Here, sparkling threads of water cascade down a line of boulders and collect in a natural pond fringed by mossy rocks. The area is so heavily wooded that you feel you’re in a dense forest as you stroll across the bridge that bobs up and down in step with your feet. The resort is sprinkled with natural streams and waterfalls. A paved pathway leads you past a large swimming pool to the coffee shop and conference hall perched at a higher level. The path continues around rock outcroppings to a terraced clearing hat holds the restaurant. All meals are buffet style so it is very informal. And there is a spacious veranda that gives you even more opportunity to commune with nature as you eat. Treks are arranged, as are visits to nearby attraction like waterfalls, lakes and caves. There are also options for bird watching and butterfly watching.
