How Do You Deal With Your Anger?

I don't get angry often and hide away rather than get into it with someone as I usually come off worst in an argument, and I usually pray. Other people might hit pillows or go for a walk. We all probably have a strategy for dealing with anger. How do you deal with yours?

Anger is one of those emotions that are "master" emotions, meaning they come with another smaller emotion that is more how we feel, and the anger is there to kind of numb the other emotion. for example, you may be angry because you feel abandoned, or betrayed, or frustrated. it is easier to feel angry then to feel those other emotions, so people tend to just feel the anger. if you want to deal with your anger, you need to understand what your really feeling first, and then deal with it. with that said, I usually just shut down and push people away until Im over it. easier said then done I gusse

It seems like we all try to avoid direct confrontation. I agree knowing where your anger is from can help.

@Boonie1 I am never sure about this. I find it too easy to say things I regret in direct confrontation. Isn:t that the danger?

yeah which is probably not the best way to deal with it...Im not saying you should explode on people, but its better for someone to deal with it directly, and find a soluition, I just cant bring myself to do so

It is good never to get angry, but I know someone who held it all in and sort of exploded in later life.

I swear a lot when I am angry. Not cursing anybody, just swearing. Probably not the nicest thing to do, but it helps me calm down.

This was a problem at times for me when I was teaching. When I started losing control of the class due to excess talking an misbehavior, I would stop and say nothing for a few minutes or count from 10 to 1 backwards.

That is a good strategy. Teaching fifteen and sixteen year olds for a term made me afraid to ever teach again!

I do not like to get angry at other people. I just like to walk away and calm down and than go back and talk to that person.

Walking away is good if you can. I try to do it as well.
