DISASTER KIT: Do you have one?

November 23, 2006 5:43pm CST
A few weeks ago, the city I live in had a water supply crisis. You couldn't drink it, wash clothes in it, dishes etc. People were going crazy for drinking water (bottled). The question was being asked, if there was a real disaster (earthquake, storm etc), would you have a first aid kit, water supply, food supply etc in your house to survive for atleast 72 hours? How many of you would be ready? I wasn't!

there was an elderly man in the newspaper the other day asking the same question and advising everyone to carry around a disaster kit and to be prepared at all times..this guy wears a yellow backpack with his "kit" in it everywhere he goes...to live like that in constant fear and worry so much that you have to go to that level or preparedness is just plain silly...to maybe have some supplies if you are in an area that is able to be touched by natural disaster might be smart to have on hand...just some basics...as for water...you can boil water to purify it

Yes, not suggesting to anyone that they wear a backpack like the guy in the paper, but it is a good idea to have water, food, first aid etc in the house. As for water, you can only boil it if it is coming out of the tap. In an earthquake, the water may be shut off completely. On the news they were suggesting 1 gallon per person per day for all purposes. Its hard to imagine needing the kit, but "better safe than sorry":-)
