God is good! Religion's bad?

how can something so sacred can create so much hatred? Religion divides continents, country's, nations, etc... Why must we do certain things to be excepted to the heavens or be a certain religion? Rather than just knowing that we're good without proving it to someone. I grew up knowing that God is good and God does good, fortunately for me religion wasn't practiced in my family and mostly where I grew up. So I never really knew the true division of religions until I came to the states. But I think that made me more tolerant. I wasn't taught (brainwashed) from a young age that there is only one way to get to the heavens. So my point is this, not knowing the technicalities of (religion) but knowing the fundamentals (faith) for God, shouldn't that be enough?

I guess most people just need a structure to get them to God. The problem occurs when they think that the way that works for them is the only way If religions could just accept that all roads lead to One, there would be no problem. Religions need to stop dividing people by insisting that they are the only true way and let people use the free will that God gave them.
