How many jobs have you had?

A colleague is moving to another company, definitely for better pay and benefits. I am happy for him. I have been in the same company for more than a decade, moving up in the career ladder. This makes me wonder though, maybe there are opportunities outside that I've not explored. How about you, how many jobs have you had? Are you like me, working with the same company for years?

No I had so many different jobs a very moving life Beatburn. I was always looking for a better opportunity and many times I got it. Sometimes it was not the right move. I cannot count how many jobs I had though. Glad you know which job you are having.

Movement and variety is good. I've held different positions in this company though sometimes I wonder how it is if I'd tried other jobs.

@Beatburn Yes, I have tried many things, and I really enjoyed working abroad. I have worked in Estonia, Poland, Scotland and Italy, and I learned a lot about the different cultures that way. I did those things when I was in my 20's, today I stay in my own country.

You've worked in a bank? That's cool. Being surrounded by all that money. Glad to know you rested from working by taking care of a household.

I've had 5 jobs in the 15 years I have started working. I think that is a pretty good number. I mostly stayed in the same type of business - childcare or grocery store business. I know they are both very opposite of each other but that is where I ended up.

It's service-oriented. I think childcare could be very rewarding not just financially.

Wow.. Seems like some people are quite opportunist and took a chance when they got one. But I really admire Bobby for being with a company for 30 years. That's an amazing dedication. I myself is not really an opportunist. I don't really look out for another job once I got one. For the last 5 years, I had worked for 2 company. The first one was not even last for 2 months, since the first day I worked there, I got a call from another company. The first job I got was from my lecturer and it was a very small organization though the salary was quite decent. But I didn't think that I could learn and grow as I expected, that's why I accept the offer from another company and stay with them for more than 4 years.

@Beatburn I was working as an assistant for my lecturer in the government organization. Then I jump into a multinational company and working as sales support for 2 years before I was transferred to be a business analyst in the same company. Honestly, I was always thought that it'd be great to have a job that I love, that I can do passionately. It'd be more than just to make a living. You do it because you love it. But in fact, along my career I've never really had one that made me wanna do it passionately. However, I admit that no matter what we do, we can always learn something from it. And that's a good point.

Hahaha! I have a lot of jobs that I've been to because I like to learn new things and also love to change for the better. I don't like staying in one place for too long unless it's really really good and I really really like the job.

I've had a lot of jobs because I never stay anywhere for very long. The longest I've kept a job is 2 years. Most I've kept around 6 months. I've been at my current job for 5 months and I really like it. Last month I got a raise and I've been given full time status. I'm hoping to stay with this company for awhile and move up the ladder.

I have lost count of all my employers as I have worked through agencies who sometimes send me to firms temping for as little as a single shift, leaving it months before sending me back to the same places. My resume (CV) is very fragmented as a result.

I'm self employed now but since I started working in 2006 I've had 3 jobs. I never stayed very long in any of the companies I worked for, whenever I could find a better opportunity (not just in terms of salary but also work-life balance) I would always go for it.

I think there is something to be said for job security and stability but I have always looked for better job opportunities in any job.In my last position I stuck it out for years because there was a mortgage and children to take care of and the pay was very good. However in the latter part I got to move up within the company to more gratifying opportunities. So I am glad I stuck it out because they have very good benefits

Indeed security and satisfaction go hand in hand especially if there's a family to consider.

My wife and I had one and the same company for 32 years after which we availed of the company's early retirement program. We did not go up the ladder though as we refused to take the opportunity to become officers. When one becomes as officer, hr can be transferred from one branch to another away from home and we chose to be with our two daughters and guide and see them grow. Looking back now (as both daughters have now their stable jobs), we believe we made the right choice of foregoing career advancement in favor of family.

It's prioritizing family that is the most important. I wouldn't mind career advancement or getting assigned to a different place if I could bring my family along.

I have experienced two employers only, both in the government sector. I came from the local government unit before I transferred to a national government agency. I haven't experienced working in a private sector though I guess big companies offered higher salaries to their employees than the government sector. Though I am in the government, I am contented with my salary. It's just enough for us.

I have been with my current company for four or so years. I have had around eight or nine jobs. I have stayed the longest at the company I am currently with. Don't plan to leave either as I am in a position that I enjoy.
