What makes you afraid of spiders and snakes?

Im just curious what makes so many people so scared of these animals. Even harmless snakes seem to get a bad rap.

Same as @sofssu I have nothing against the spiders, but I cannot stand snakes. I think it's a phobia, just like some people are afraid of the dark or of the water.

I have nothing against spiders most here are harmless. But we have too many cobras around to take chances with snakes..

I have a relative that freaks out even seeing a snake on TV. I just don't understand how you can be scared when its on a TV where you know there is no way it can harm you.

@loki1982 Nah, I don't freak out seeing a live snake like I did a couple of weeks ago.. However, I am a bit nervous when i see the hood raised.. I just stand still.. they usually pass by quietly.
