Is Islam a Religion of Peace?

United States

Many say Islam is a religion of peace. I can't help but wonder where that idea comes from because I've been studying it and the life of it's founder muhammad. From what I've learned, it can't be peaceful, when it's followers are supposed to model every aspect of their lives like muhammad. Study his life and you'll see that he was not peaceful at all, especially toward the end of his life after he gained more followers, power and money.

Very volatile topic. Now many people are thinking about this issue. I cannot reach a verdict.

@vandana7 Yes I have, and the crusaders were only taking their land back from islam. You said yourself history books can be unreliable. The Crusades is one of those cases. They were bloody and cruel. That's what happens in war. And the Catholics were/are not Christians.

Read the koran, watch the news. Study the history of islam and the life of muhammad. It shouldn't take you long to reach a verdict.

I'm not asking about or studying "any religion". I'm wondering about islam. It doesn't seem too peaceful to me. It's in the news daily.

@rachael5760 That doesn't sound very peaceful to me, if they're afraid to speak out. From what I've learned, the violent ones are the "good" muslims.

Although I have not studies religions, but think that it is the interpretation that defines a religion.Religions don't create divisions, their interpretation does.

Islam itself may not be any different to other religions because violence was part of every religion in the past , if we read the old scriptures we can see that clearly ! But the problem with Islam is that it has been interpreted differently by different people to suit their agenda, so the entire community has got a bad name. In India we have the third largest muslim population in the world and most of them are peace loving except for a few who have been brain washed into thinking that Jihad and violence is ok in the name of Allah . But this is a small number !

They'll stay peaceful as long as their the minority. Once they become the majority, they start trouble and will overthrow the government. They have up to 4 wives, some have even more. Each wife has as many children as possible. This video explains the demographics.
Islam will overwhelm Christendom unless Christians recognize the demographic realities, begin reproducing again, and share the gospel with Muslims.

@Bluedoll Islam knows nothing about separation of church and state. If a muslm doesn't have "such ambitions, he isn't a good muslim. A 'good" muslim isn't a 'good" muslim unless he's willing to fly an airplane full of innocent people into a building full of innocent people.

@PrarieStyle If we are talking about a selective group that well might be the case. It seems that politics and rulership is a big part for many Muslims. Some people who are of Muslim faith though might not have such ambitions? They might follow the others or feel they have to. Do you honestly think all people connected with Islam have such ambitions? It is possible that Islam States however could have such an agenda on their political horizon.
ISIS must be brought to justice for their crimes against Christians and all humanity. Whatever religion they claim -- it is not Islam.

I've not and most likely will not study the books however from what I read Allah means "God of Peace" though the word has other meanings as well? Islam itself appears to be confusing because in Islam there are Christian Muslims, Radical Muslims, as well as political Muslims, etc. because the religion does merge strongly into politics. Leadership is very much part of a culture too. I think this side of Islam makes it extremely difficult to define. Not all Muslims are the same. Some might be angry warlike while others are peaceful.

@PrarieStyle I don't know much about it. Like many Christian religions there are some variations in belief. I don't know specifics as to what they actually believe. " Both religions believe in the Virgin birth of Jesus, but the Biblical and Quranic accounts differ." -

@WhatsHerName,I am a Hindu from India. Here I have heard a slogan raised by the followers of a political party. The slogan is,'Every Muslim is not a terrorist, but how is this that every terrorist is a Muslim.'Honestly speaking,I want to believe in this slogan. But I admit,I have not read the quoran or the biography of Muhammad. And somewhere I had also read a sentence written by Mahatma Gandhi,'Generally Muslims are bullies whereas Hindus are cowards.'I don't know what to say.

@PrarieStyle Sorry to differ, dear.Cowardice is a sin. It's the mother of all sins.I'd neither be a bully, nor a coward who encourages bullies to keep harassing everyone. If we fear them, they will force us to obey their orders which is unacceptable to me.

I have not studied enough to reply to you. Anyway I believe that you know what the Muslim community say about their religion, I quote "Islam is a religion of peace, and if you say that it isn't, we will kill you"... that replies to your question I believe.

I always thought that how we see people should not be based on their religion because we have brains and we can think for ourselves and we make choices on what to do. I don't know much about Islam and if it's not a peaceful belief, there are still Muslims who are good and generally, still want to lead peaceful lives and be left alone in their beliefs. A person will choose to do bad regardless of the religion, culture and family life he or she had because primarily, humans are both good and evil.

If it's not a peaceful belief as you say, then "Muslims who are good and generally still want to lead peaceful lives and be left alone in their beliefs" wouldn't be very good Muslims would they? You might want to do yourself a favor and study the religion of islam as well as the other main religions. Islam isn't even a religion, much less peaceful. It's founder was a mad man who beheaded people, married a 6 year old little girl when he was 51. He was a barbaric terrorist and told his followers they have to model every aspect of their lives after him.

@Daljinder Lol, I see you have already re-collected your self. Changing your name to "innocent" won't make you innocent. I detest islam and I'm not going to hide it for you or anyone else. Try as you might to run around and post on every single topic, comment, and response you think is against islam, won't make it a religion or peaceful. Lol, you just look like a dog chasing it's tail...

It depends on the nature of the person, some people are here to do good some are bad, religion is just an excuse for their actions.
