Rooster Woes

Came across an interesting photograph in a discussion in the 'New User' section, where a boy is seen wearing a skirt and undergoing the 'murga' punishment for failing his class exams, the punishment was meted out to him by his sister. The 'murga', or rooster punishment, is an old South Asian form of punishment, where the punished has to appear like a 'murga', or rooster by half-squatting and extending both arms from behind the thighs all the way up to the head, to hold his ears in each hand. Needless to say, it is a stress punishment meant for obstreperous ones at the schools by the teachers; as well as for petty thieves and eve teasers by the police, or even by the crowd, if the latter are unfortunate enough.

I am sure you can't do all that in school these days. The kids will take you to the court for corporal punishment. They do not allow verbal abuse in school too these days.

While corporal punishment, is being taken seriously in India, still there are instance replete, where teachers and policemen, have been able to get away with such things.

Poor kid to have to go through that, just for failing exams. If it was for bad behaviour it would be more understandable.

It seems, it is still very much prevalent in India, in homes, as well as schools. There are variations of this punishment, like the standing 'murga', the sitting 'murga', the swaying 'murga', and so on.

That sounds like a very hard position to get into. I bet that kids try to behave in school and avoid that sort of punishment.

Yes , it surely is, in many cases it can damage the back of the person undergoing it. In obscure places, this punishment is still prevalent, but in others, this can boomerang on school authorities.
