I just saw a post where r is used for are and u is used for you. Are we permitted to write this way at myLot?

NO, it is not allowed, here is the rule as written in the help section. "... is never tolerated... Using all-caps, excessive punctuation, or "text speak" Flag those posts if you see them again.

@allknowing I have read the rules, as I suppose that the others should too. When I have a doubt I check. As you asked, I checked.

I don't know about that. However the short hand definitely isn't going to help with quality content so I imagine it would be better that people not use the shorthand.

Just because bad English is tolerated that does not mean we have to take advantage of that

@allknowing Exactly, and it doesn't take but two seconds more to type you instead of u or are instead of r.

This is specifically mentioned in the rules and is strictly forbidden. Personally I am quite pleased about that because text speak is one of my pet hates.

The official guidelines state that we aren't allowed to make fun of people who don't write perfect English or who don't speak English well. So, I don't think that perfect grammar is a requirement. I didn't see a thing about text-speak. I will read it again, though.

You can always edit that post rather than Admin bringing it down.
