Have you ever tried to write a poem?

If so, do you think you succeeded? And was it a formal poem - rhyming or otherwise - or was it what is sometimes termed "free verse"? If you have tried both, which did you find easier and/or more satisfying to write?

I do write poetry but have not written any for some time now, I did begin to doubt if I should write any more More I the fool, for wasting time, for writing verse for writing rhyme I should use my time for those who follow, as did Zeus as did Apollo Like the god of truth and prophecy, I prepare for those that see There is no secret rendezvous, no tryst, or hidden fond adieu Just words set out as I see things, my look on life and all it brings I write of nature how we abuse it, I try to show how we can use it I write of love, its joy and pain, I write of children who cry in vain More I the fool to think that I can show the way to happiness Its in your hands, how things will be, if we succeed if we progress So take this world, it's for the young, not for us poets all unsung But if you read what I have writ, more I the fool to think to quit For if one word, one verse, one rhyme, should make you think More I the fool, I waste no time.

I like the sentiment, but the poem itself needs a bit of attention! There are some good lines here, but others that just don't work.

I've written poems before for a class. I think it's easier to write free verse. Sometimes it's hard to find rhymes that work and make sense.

Writing good free verse is not easy, because you need some structure otherwise what you end up with is not a poem.

Yes, I have and I was quite successful - even if I say so myself. I've written poems for a wedding and birthdays in German and funny ones in English of which I'm especially proud. I've always used rhymes or patterns like haiku.

@MALUSE I have never been able to get to grips with the haiku, alas it seems to lack something fundamental, a rhythm.

@MALUSE Very good, and I took your advice from the last triplet, too!

@pgntwo I've just re-read my haikus. How very clever I was when I wrote them! A classical form for a nonsense subject.

I've written many,of both but for me poetry should rhyme, because it suits my mind and sits well on my shoulders, I did publish some in a Kindle book..really just observations of life.

I have been a free verse poet for generations. Look me up on Amazon when you get bored. I am not sure what success is- I am not in the New Yorker. My work has been a part of several chapbooks in little presses. Poetry is just life for me.

I tried rhymes before. But that was for my daughter's assignment, maybe 2 rhymes, one for my daughter and the other one for her classmate. Nothing follows since then. I only like to read poems. I don't make any.

I have written many poems. I found one the other day that I had forgotten about that is in honor of heritage and family. Quite good if I dont mind saying so haha I would never be able to write like that now. I started writing when I was a child and lost it as the years went by. Rhyming was the original then as time went on got more freestyle. Do you write poetry then John?

I do rhymes, mostly silly ones, though I can be serious occasionally. What about you? Have you tried any yourself?

I tend to be more of an analyst of poetry than a composer - I know how easy it is to write bad poetry and I try not to add to the quantity!

I never tried writing poetry because I knew I didn't know how. In fact I have trouble even understanding some poetry. Other people would be waxing lyrical about things in poems that I could not see, even when they pointed them out. I never got much out of reading poetry, but I do love hearing poets read their poetry. Some years ago I was watching a poet being interviewed and he encouraged people to write a poem. The way he spoke about poetry was inspiring so I foolishly gave writing poetry a try. I wrote four poems, in spite of knowing next to nothing about poetry. I published them on-line on HubPages but under a different user name. I had the feeling that my efforts would be a bit of a disaster and I didn't want the poems associated with me. I wrote the four poems, that is what I called them though I doubt that is what you would call them, in a couple days. I have not been back there much since then. I am glad that I wrote under a different user name. According to my stats the poems got about 4000 views and 125 comments. Half of those comments I would think would be my responses .

Poetry come in many shapes and sizes, and that is the beauty of it. However, because it consists of words, and everybody uses words all the time, many people think they can write poetry when - to be frank - they can't. I think that most people are capable of using words in a poetic way, for a line or two maybe, but not of sustaining the effort for a complete poem.

I've always found free verse easier and more satisfying to write, and, given the awful straining for rhyme employed by so many 'amateur' poets, I usually find it more satisfying to read. I remember your many poetry reviews from the old Helium days John. Always insightful.

I've written a few poems. More are free verse than rhyming, though I do use devices like alliteration now and then.
