Have you ever sat up all night talking to someone?

Years ago I worked with a Canadian colleague (not that his nationality has anything to do with it really) and one day he told me that he had known his wife was ‘the one’ after they had sat up all night talking together. I just burst out laughing, and told him that if I had married everyone I had sat up all night talking to, I would have been married at least a dozen times already! I have had very many long and fascinating conversations with all sorts of people, sometimes old friends of long standing, sometimes people I just met, but I certainly wasn’t going to marry them just on that basis! I wasn’t surprised when, a couple of years later, he told me they were divorced. Of course having interesting things to talk about is a great basis for any relationship, but is it enough in a spouse? It is not often that I am talking through the night, although it has happened in the past. I recollect one time while I was managing a pub in Bolton that a friend of mine stayed for a dring after we had closed. We got a drink and sat chatting, followed by another drink and so on. Neither of us had a clue what the time was until daylight began to appear on the horizon.

I have done this several times with different people. One was a high school friend that I ran into several years later and we exchanged phone numbers. The first night we talked on the phone we had so much to catch up on. We stayed on the phone quite a while. It was good learning about her life and her kids. I have dated guys that I would have long conversations with as well. I am too darn old to do that now. Not to mention I am happily married and I have kids. No more long conversations for me. Now the thing is texting.

I don't think exchanging texts can ever be quite the same as being there in person.

I often end up involved in all night chats, often without noticing the time vanish

Not the only basis in choosing a spouse of course, but I guess it really depends on how special the chemistry is.

Yes, I remember talking to a couple of women on different occasions all night. Like you, if that was the case, I would have been married many times over! LOL!

I have had many different girlfriends and friends that I have talked all night to. I'm not married to any today (though I was quite serious about a few of them).

Well its certainly not enough! But is important since you should be able to talk to your spouse for the whole night without getting bored and if your able to do that with a single person over and over again, then they're worth checking out from the spouse angle
