Mensa is a non-profit organziation for people with extremely high IQ's. It is open to people who score at the 98th percentile or higher on a standardized, supervised IQ or other approved intelligence test. There are members in more than 100 countries. There is a forum for exchanging ideas, lectures and discussions. Are you a member or do you know someone that is? I have a friend who lives in London, England who is a member. There is an online test you can try if you are interested to see what your score would be.

I have been a member of British Mensa in the past, but I was quite disillusioned and simply left. It was curiosity that enticed me to apply some 35 to 40 years ago. The application process consists of a test to complete at home followed by a supervised test. The home test had set times for each portion and an overall completion time, so I deliberately allowed less time for myself because there was little point in cheating and being invited to take a supervised test that way. The supervised test was on a Saturday morning, so I persuaded one of the part time barmaids to cover my shift while I attended. About a week or so later I received the invite to enrol and was informed that my IQ was 168, which placed me in the top 2% of Mensa members. This was my first disappointment because if I qualified in the top 2% then obviously the standard had been set too low to gain more members. It did not take long for me to discover that Mensa had very little to offer me, so I simply did not renew the membership. A few years later I was contacted and informed that Mensa had undergone several changes, so I rejoined, but nothing had really changed so that was my last year of membership. The monthly magazine was interesting to some degree. The puzzles page was often worthwhile, but most of the articles were nonsense written purely in an attempt to impress.

@jstory07 It is not likely to impress anyone. If that was the only purpose then I would never have bothered to enrol in the first place.

Like @koalemos I did the home test, and even though it seemed I qualified I couldn't be bothered to take the proper test. There didn't seem to be much advantage anyway, apart from 'bragging rights'.

You would probably have enjoyed the supervised test because there were some fascinating and challenging questions involved. For me taking that test was more satisfying than the whole 2 years of membership where.

@jaboUK The atmosphere or surroundings were quite irrelevant to me because I never pay attention to such things and do not get distracted.

@Asylum Yes I probably would have enjoyed doing the actual test, but I didn't fancy the whole 'schoolroom exam' thing. After I took my driving test I vowed I would never do another exam or test in my life, and I haven't.

I took online tests just for plain curiosity, but I am not at all interested in joining Mensa. I know that my husband rated top 1% with an IQ of about 135.

My niece took some kind of test when she was in elementary school and they told my sister she was at the genius level and that explained why she was so bored in school. Someone told her (can't remember if it was the people who gave the test or a psychiatrist) that there is a very thin line between genius and madness.

@simone10 There is always a better way to say something and that should have been handled a little differently.

@Marcyaz I know, right? I think what they are saying is probably true in some cases but there has to be a better way of saying it.

This brings back some good memories from my yester-years. Grandpa would get me some IQ book and then would explain me the logic on the questions I would be wrong. Years later, I found this website and did take tests occasionally. Even completed one right now. I could join but then, what is the benefit of it? I dont see much. In the normal world, I would still be considered insane

I have no idea what my IQ is. I never had it tested. But I doubt I am in that percentile. I also don't know anyone who is. Or at least I don't think so. I never actually got into a conversation about IQ's. Strange.

@Marcyaz I know it's not. Otherwise people would be mentioning their IQ's all over the internet.

Does MENSA ever 'discuss the optimal options for governmental-action and forward their conclusions to the leaders involved'?

Oh no, i'm not a member LOL I don't think I even want to take the test. I hate taking IQ tests because I'm not that way wired, to be honest. I don't enjoy them at all. I always seem to score highly, although not high enough to be a potential MENSA member. All i know is, I'm not dumb and that's fine by me.

I do know of people who are members but none I know personally. My grand daughter was a member of the gifted and talented program here in my home town. That is probably the closer to Mensa I would ever get.

My brother is a member of Mensa. He is some kind of a genius. And, then there is his sister, me, who flunked the IQ test. But, I like having a brother in Mensa.
