Do You Shut Down Your Computer When You Leave It?

Tree turning colour near my house.

I was talking to a friend of mine the other day and he happened to mention that he never shuts his computer down. He just puts it on 'sleep', and that way when he comes back on it takes him straight back to what he was doing. I don't know much about computers, but in the 2 years I've had one I've always shut it down whenever I've left it. However since my friend told me about it, I've just been putting it to sleep, and I'm loving the way it's so much quicker. What do you think? Are there any reasons why I shouldn't be doing this? Mine is a laptop which I unplug when I leave it, so will it affect it's battery life?

dang! i'm a tad jealous o'er the beautiful autumn color ya got to admire 'cross the road - lucky gal!! still waitin' here fer some'f that 'magic'. 's fer leavin' the puter on? it ought not 've any effect'n the battery outside 'f usage. fer myself? i ne'er leave the puter on when i aint handy. i'm paranoid 'bout folks hackin' in with the net bein' on. i figure its also hard'n the coolin' fan?? but'm uncertain 'f such. i didn't purchase a top'f the line laptop 'n the fan that came with this dell aint much fer coolin', so i've a coolin' pad attached with 2 fans to make sure it don't o'erheat. now, that drains the battery purty quick 's it relies'n such fer its power. i was most helpful, eh?

@crazyhorseladycx I think I might have to edit - I didn't mean I leave it on, just that I use the 'sleep' button. I don't know about a fan - I don't think I've got one. Anyway, you tried to be helpful, thanks. That tree is lovely, isn't it?

I think most PC's come with cooling fan inside @jaboUK the one in mine's busted n boy does that dilly over heat in the summer, it's been fine since we finally dropped to the 80s though. I agree with @crazyhorseladycx, you have a beautiful view and my camera is totally jealous.

It is extremely rare for me to shut down the computer and never use Sleep either. In fact I have changed the power settings so that it will not Sleep after being left unused for a while. All I do is turn off the monitor and walk away. It was good practice to shut down maybe 15 to 20 years ago to avoid undue wear and tear, but perfectly safe to leave it nowadays. Leaving the laptop switched on and unplugged will drain the battery, but should not cause any harm. Of course all laptop batteries seem to lose power retention in time and do not last long when unplugged.

@jaboUK I have never used the Sleep option by choice, although in the early days my computers would go to sleep if I left them and went to watch a television program. This always annoyed me because I then had to wait for it to wake up again, so now I always change the power settings in the Control Panel as soon as I get a new computer. Life was a real pain when I had very little idea about computers. I used to hate having to enter a password when the screensaver had been on, which was a default setting in Windows back in those days.

@Asylum Thank you so much for your input, you obviously know what you're talking about. I thought I only had 2 options,- shut down or sleep, and now I find there's a 3rd

@Asylum Mine turns itself off if I leave it. As you can tell, I know very little about computers - I was 73 before I even touched one. Don't you use a password at all?

I leave it on all day, unless the weather is hot because this tower produces a lot of heat, and so does my ancient CRT. I leave it on even if I leave the house. I do shut it down at night unless the weather is very cold, because then it keeps the room warm without turning the heat on. But if you never shut it down, you don't let it have a chance to clear the memory and it can get very clogged. I have to reboot a couple of times a day simply because I am doing too many things at once and my computer just gets slow.

@jaboUK Everything you are doing on your computer right now is using RAM - random access memory. Even when you close certain applications and windows, some of that is still clogging up the memory. Over time, that situation can really overwhelm your computer. A reboot helps refresh everything.

Since I usee mine everyday, in one form or another, I never shut it down, as it just takes to long to get it up and going again when I want to use it. I just put the lid down, and I am good to go the next day.

There's more than just viruses out there @jaboUK my brower was hijacked by what the call a P.U.P. and I ended up paying someone to remove the dang thingy. Now I'm much more careful. I was shocked when they told me that antivirus and antimalware didn't always detect those lil boogers.

I'm not the best informed on these issues, but having had the same laptop for about 3 years now I can tell you that mine is always left plugged into the power. Apparently the lifespan of a laptop greatly depends on how often it is ran from the battery only. I also leave it up all of the time, I only close out our email account.

@jaboUK I do keep it plugged into a powerbar, just in case I'm not home and the hydro flickers during a storm, those bars are supposed to regulate any possible surges from frying your computer.

@Juliaacv I keep my laptop plugged in all the time I'm using it at home, but never leave it plugged in at night. I've often wondered if it does any harm to keep it plugged in when it's not being used, and you seem to have answered that, thanks.

@jaboUK I have been told that it is better to plug it in to charge the battery then run it off the battery until it runs down, then charge again (my partner is an IT professional). It seems to be working well so far! I've had this two or three years which some people think is quite old for a laptop but in my book is almost new!

We shut ours down every night, but as we both use it often we just leave it running during the day. I guess we'd save a bit of power if we turned it off, but we both tend to use it often for a variety of things.

I tend to switch it on and leave it on unless it seems to be running a little hot. They tell me it runs hot because I have so many windows open at the same time and the poor little laptop is having a fit trying to keep up lol... I have got 12 tabs open at the moment and it is running cool enough for me not to be bothered. My menfolk tell me that it is good to let the battery run down so sometimes I don't connect it to the power source and let it run on battery.

I don't think it hurts your battery but I don't know, I have a mac. Mine goes to sleep when I leave it and pops open when I touch my mouse. Every once in a while it seem slow and troubled so I shut it down and make it reboot and all the glitches are gone.

So you never turn yours off properly? Mine goes to sleep on it's own if I leave it, but I still have to turn it on when I go back to it. Yours springs back to life just by touching the mouse?

@jaboUK That's right. I only shut it down when its misbehaving which isn't very often. But it is a Mac. My daughter works at a major university and they use all apple products. She gets a discount so bought me mine.(with money from one of my sons too. The youngest son is broke and hasn't figured out how to manage money yet)

My MacBook Pro will go to the screensaver if I leave it untouched for a few minutes or whatever time setting I choose. But the camera will work even if the screensaver is on. The college girl I mentioned in comments above thought she was safe too. Egad. This thread sounds like a majority PC discussion. Glad it's providing a platform for the info exchange!
