what's with basements and attics?

Horror movies almost always take a person on a creaky, crackling journey to the attic or the cellar/basement. Dark cobwebby denizens of slow, tortured doom. Gary Busey and his crawl spaces. Who knows what will be down there or way up there, past that door? Why investigate? Cause you got a worm and can't NOT go check it out. What's behind that dirty, dusty glass? Oh just a lab and scientific experiments! You want to be next? Huh? Do you?

Our local horror movies are mostly about abandoned houses, hospitals and ghosts in dormitories. So cliche.

@cahaya1983 In the old days the surgeons wore creepy green outfits and the operating room was a sickly morgue green.

@abbygreenhill there was a horrid moment in the Birds where the lady went up to the attic and yep, there were scads of maniac birds up there- one pecked her hand and pecked her hand as she tried to get out of there. Bloody and painful and freaky.

@sallypup That's probably the only horror movie I ever watched.

@tiarasoceanview Years ago I was in a Montana house. We went up into the attic- a long, narrow room with a window at the end- so high up and that window at the end. I got out of there fast.
