I had asked for help because on my Windows 10, (and new computer) I couldn't download or update anything. I wanted Skype and needed Java and I had another program that I couldn't download from the site, but I had the disk, and even that didn't work. I ended up trying to restore my computer (another post) where I went as far back as I could and according to my computer, the system restore didn't work. So I had a choice of re-setting it or getting the disk from my son and do a complete start over. However, I thought, I am going to try one more time and guess what??? I was able to download all three programs and I wonder if perhaps the system restore did work, but for some reason my computer didn't know it. If that is true, then I need to update, because any updates I had are now gone. Has anyone have this happen before? Where the computer something didn't happen, yet if it didn't happen, how is it that I was able to download something I couldn't before? And now I should sign out, I want to check for any Windows updates before I have to leave for school.

That is strange. I have no idea why that happened.

I don't have windows 10 yet but I do have a free upgrade for it. I have just been holding off because my computer is about 6-7 years old and so far it is running okay.

You must have Window 7? I notice that those with 7 are in no hurry while those of us with 8 want the upgrade sooner. I am really loving it, and of course I knew there would be bugs to work out, but now that I can download again and the parental control (that didn't work for weeks) is working, I can't complain.

@simone10 See, I can always pick out the Window 7 users from Windows 8, because most of the time Windows 7 users are happy with their computer.

Do you mean that when you run Automatic Update it fails to install all of the updates and returns an error message? If this is the case please go to Automatic Update and read the error number then post it here. This is usually a 10 digit code such as 0x80080001. There are a few files that have been known to cause such an issue and I had the same situation with an Office File Validation update myself, which I solved by manually installing it. As for System Restore, this has been known to display "Could not complete" and yet has completed. If a restoration fails it can often be overwritten by choosing an earlier restore point to run.

My head spins. I would be so stressed because I clearly, after reading this, know that my technology IQ is very low.

You know, @AmbiePam that besides my children, I learned most of what I know about computer right here on MyLot? It's amazing what one can learn and I have read some that make my head spin, like when a computer person writes a post.

I know I have done system restore and it did remove software that was downloaded or updated, but my computer would say it failed, but now I wonder if it didn't fail, but did restore.

I'm tagging @Asylum because I don't think he knew this happened and I wonder what he thinks? Of course I am thinking that maybe I can make a disk, according to what he told me, that way if I have any future problems, I can just re-install Windows 10
