This week the suggestion button was removed from our posts. This is great because it was voted on. However, a few people still want to make sure their followers know when they add a new discussion. But, I feel they are going at this the wrong way. Recently I have been receiving notification about a person mentioning me in their comment. When I go to see the comment I notice it’s a new post. What the person or persons have done now is add a @name (names of their followers) at the end of their comments. This send each person they mention a notification to their box. Very cleaver but I consider this spamming. Yes I loved suggestions but I don’t like this. I wish you would stop adding my name to end of a comment so I receive a notification. I would rather you send me a message with your post asking me to read it. Sorry guy/gals I felt like I needed to address this because if it continue everyone will start getting angry. We all have to go by the decision the majority voted on so let’s all play fair. No need to pad the end of a comment with a ton of @names so we all get a notification of your post. Currently I find out that searching, commenting on interesting topics, and interacting with members I don’t know gets me a lot of views on my topics. I just feel like a few people are spamming me by adding a @name at the end of their comments. How do you feel about this? Has it been happening to you? Image source - freeimages.com

I like to think that most people here are courteous and considerate. At this point in time, I am going to choose to believe that the members here will act in the spirit of good community and not abuse this. If it does become an issue, then we will of course have to look in to means to address it. But I don't think this is going to be a problem.

Thank you. After I put this discussion up to draw attention to the ones and others it has stopped and all the comments have been edited and all the @names removed.

@poehere I have sent a PM to GoAskAlice asking if he has any thoughts or input on this discussion. If he has, I expect he will comment on the best procedure to follow.

You might be right but I would rather take an open approach to this problem first. I feel if they see this here and read it then they will stop without having to report them. But if they continue there might not be another way around this problem but to report them. I hate to do that and would rather give them a change to stop first.

The idea to add a user's name in comments per se is not bad. It could be used to draw another user's attention. However, if you feel that someone is using it excessively then you could ask the user not to do so.

@poehere Yeah, if the user has mentioned names of many users then it could be termed as spamming. Initial thought on reading your post was that the particular user was trying to mention your name only.

Well when you see 8 to 10 @user at the end of a comment this s more than drawing the attention to a user. This is spamming all these people to go to read their post.

@dpk262006 I did center this post around my name so they would know I didn't like it. But no the truth is they had added anywhere from 8 to 12 @names after their comment. They did not use my @name in the post. It was added to the end of the comment along with others.

@sugartoes NO NO it is not you and you have never spammed me at all. It is something one person started and a lot of people are now following. Spamming is when you leave a comment at the end of your post and use 10 @names to make sure your followers know you have a post. That's what I call spamming. Commenting and liking and leaving images is fantastic and what the site is all about. If you want me to read something please by all means send me a message. I will be more than happy to go and read your post. I love this and some people send me messages and I am so happy to read their posts. I just don't like to have a person tag me with an @poehere at the end of their comment along with other people so make sure I receive a notification and go to their post and read it. That's spamming. Not you.

I have not seen many abuse with this feature for the moment, although I have had to tell today to a member who did it several times in the same discussion to stop this running gag. It can indeed become as bad as spam if you are sent to discussions where you have nothing to do.

@Hatley @poehere @topffer I have had it happen to me where I did not think it was spam and also where I did think it was spam. I was also on the discussion that Top was referring to, and in that case it certainly was spam.

I'm glad I am not the only one this is happening to. I didn't answer their post and I deleted their notification. I think it is spam and not fair to me to receive these notifications because there is no longer suggestions.

I've noticed it a couple of times, mainly from people I've never interacted with before. We all find the discussions that interest us in our own way and there is no need to resort to such tactics,

@Hatley I totally agree with all of you. I love to pick and chose topics to comment on. I love to interact with lots of different people. Maybe the topic they want me to read is not one I would of read anyhow. I feel like I can find my own topics to read and others can do the same.

I do agree with you on this one. This post was not centered around suggestions it was to point out bad practices and spamming. Adding a lot of @names at the end of a comment is cheating and trying to get people to go to their discussion. I basically was saying I don't like to be spammed and to stop adding @poehere at the end of your discussion so it send me a notification of your post. Just send me an email.

I am often "called" to a discussion with the person using the "@" symbol in front of my user name. I do not think that this is spamming, especially if the comment is directed towards me. I use it myself in a similar manner. From what I am reading here, though, this is not the kind of way it was being used. I have questioned a few times people using this method to call a group of people, but I did not see it as a problem, especially since in most cases the person was not calling the people to their own discussion. However, maybe those instances would be better done with the "suggest" feature as that is the intended use of it.

If a comment is directed to me I don't call it spamming. But to be called to a post along with 10 others at the end of a comment that I know nothing about is spamming.

@AbbyGreenhill Let us hope so because if they keep doing this I will stop following them and the ones I do follow I like reading their posts. But even if I don't follow them anyone can add an @name to their post and you'll still get the notification. So the only way is to block and I don't think this will work either. I don't feel like reporting them I just want them to read this and stop dong it.

It's happened to me a lot. I have a lot of people now adding @name on the end of post to send me a notification. I personally don't agree with this. I just got a few more today. On these I refused to answer or even read the post. Normally I would of read it otherwise. But because of this I didn\t read it or even comment on it.

The answer is to simply report it to the owners of the site and they will be the final arbiters. From my perspective it is spamming. I might check out a person's post once, but not again. I wish it was against the site's policies because it's a waste of my time.

Yes I agree it's spamming. That is the point of this post to politely ask them to stop. I don't like it and I am starting to see more and more of it since the site took away suggestions and they can no longer suggest their own posts. I want to try the nice way first to let them know this isn't the right way to let a person know they have a new discussion on the board. I look often and can find discussion I enjoy reading and answering on. Just like you and all the others on the site. I hope they get the hint that nobody here will accept this and stop now before it gets out of control.

Ann, that's so wrong. They should only add your name, just to reply to your post or comment. I agree with always smiling. Report it to Ask Alex and see what Admin has to say. No Mylotter should spam anyone by adding their name, just to get paid. That should be frowned upon.

It is fine if they say a comment or mention me in their comment in reference to a post I have written. But consider I did not comment or even read this and my name was added to the end it was spamming me to go to their discussion and comment on this one.
