How do you teach a dog to bark?

Seriously, how do you teach a dog to bark whenever someone rings the doorbell or knocks? Our little Shih Tzu has never been a barker, but our Lab does, when she is in her back yard. But neither dog will bark when someone is at the door. I would like it if the Lab would bark when someone is at the door, because sometimes I'm in my office working and I don't hear the door. The only way I know someone is there, is if I see one of the dogs jumping by the door. Anyone have any suggestions or tips?

Preiti barks normally but if I want her to bark at a particular time I keep saying 'who, who ' a few times. She becomes alert and starts barking. Try it.

I think if you have dogs that don't bark, then you're rather lucky. One of our cats had no miaow when he came to live with us because he'd never NEEDED one because his kitty mum was always with him. He found it when he got himself shut in a cupboard.and needed to get our attention.

She barks outside a lot, just not at the door.

The golden retriever of my niece barks when she is happy, so usually she barks when someone is allowed inside so she can get cuddles, but not when she hears someone by the door.

I think it's because she followed our other dog that just gets excited when people come to the door.
