My cat Chloe did something unusual last night

Chloe is my elderly cat who often sleeps with me. Not once in all the years I've had her has she deliberately woke me up. Usually, I will wake up on my own during the night to go to the bathroom and she is there, chirps at me and goes back to sleep. Last night, though, I was awakened by the feeling of a cold nose being rubbed against my hand, over and over. I laid there a bit to see if I woke up because I had to go to the bathroom, but I didn't. I told Chloe to lay down (which she usually will do when I tell her), but she kept on walking back and forth in an anxious kind of way and periodically head-butting my arm or hand. I got a little frustrated at her antics because they were so out of character and because I knew the door was open, so she could leave if she wanted. That's when I felt something wet hit my face. I knew it was raining because that's what put me to sleep. I love rain. But, I had my back to the window and there's no way I should have felt rain drops on my face. That's when I realized the wind was blowing and pushing the rain on to me and my bed. Even my blanket was wet and I'd slept right through it. Once I closed the window, Chloe laid down and went to sleep. It didn't click until I got up later this morning that she had wakened me because the rain was coming in. She knew it wasn't a good thing and made sure I noticed it. I'm going to have to look at Chloe a whole lot differently from here on out.

I expect it was uncomfortable for her. That's a lovely photo - has she really got different coloured eyes?

Hi Jabo! No - it was how the flash went off and reflected more from the one eye than the other. Both eyes are greenish colored. I think she was concerned that the water was coming inside and she knew that shouldn't happen. It was interesting.

@jerzgirl How sweet that she was looking after you. I did wonder about the eyes.

What a smart cat to wake you up to close the window so you two do not get wet.

She surprised me because she wasn't a cat who really seemed to pay attention to those kinds of things. We lost her a year after I posted this to a vicious cancer in her jaw. She was 18.

@jerzgirl I am so so sorry Wendy. That is very hard to lose one of our furry friends.

Well, she was probably getting wet too, and it annoyed her. The funniest thing one of my cat's ever did was when I was cooking hot dogs and dropped on the floor, and never noticed it. The cat brought it to me meowing...like did you see what you did? or may I have this? lol. Probably just he was letting me know of my clumsiness!

I'm sorry I missed your response. That's pretty cool about your cat. He knew it was yours. Mine would have just chowed down once it cooled off. Courtesy is not usually part of their behavior! LOL Chloe was probably annoyed at being wet on.

That is pretty cool that she woke you up to let you know that something wasn't right.

I know - I've never considered her a Lassie cat like our previous elder was (she watched over my daughter and came to get me every time she thought she was in trouble). Chloe has just never done anything "cat-like", almost like she forgot how to "cat". But, this last couple of years, she seems to be figuring it out. Took most of her 16 years, but she seems much happier.

Cats are truly amazing @jerzgirl . I have 12 indoor and 2 outdoor ones and they 'tell' me things quite often. A Blue Ribbon goes to Chloe. Sorry for the late response.

Wow! 12 indoor cats??? Holy cats!! I can't always keep up with three. I'd love being around that many, but don't think I could handle their care. (Although, I have to admit, I had 11 when I began dating my now ex.) I love them so much!! Can't allow them out here, though. Too many trucks and cars.

@jerzgirl After my husband murdered my 3 cats that I'd had for 15 and 18 years, I didn't have any and apparently the 'word' got out and the next thing you know I'm rescuing all those others.

Animals are indeed the best friends of us. They have excellent sixth sense and can confirm arrival of any upcoming disaster much better than us. The point is that very few humans can understand their signals.

That is true - they have far more sensitive senses than we do (and sometimes just plain more sense. lol)

@jerzgirl Ma'am, True. But, not all humans can understand those signals.

She surprised me. She's never been one to make announcements of any kind except that the water bowl was empty. My "little girl" is growing up (now that she's 16). LOL

So the cat is also a watchdog.
