The HR department of the company I work for are currently going through a process of updating their records. In order to comply with government legislation they need to provide proof that their employees are legally entitled to work in the UK.
Consequently they have asked us all to bring in our passports so they can photocopy them and update their records accordingly.
Imagine my surprise when I discovered that, according to HR records, my country of origin is Mauritius!
"OK, you've caught me out", I said. "The law's the law. Put me on the first flight back to my homeland".
I'm still waiting!!

I found that one employer listed my pay as going into an another employees account - I was able to get it sorted before any income changed hands but thanks to a useless HR team two of us knew each other's bank account details. - all we got was an apology - no one was disciplined over it.

@WorDazza they are often unaccountable as they would be the ones we would complain to and they protect themselves

Mauritius only became independent from the British in 1968? So you could technically have been British-Mauritius!
Makes you ok to work in the mothership after all?

@WorDazza Well, you should take time off to "discover your roots" nonetheless. xD

@Drosophila Sadly I can't afford to 'discover my roots' at my own expense. Now, thanks to your research I'm not going to get the government funded repatriation.
