The HR department of the company I work for are currently going through a process of updating their records. In order to comply with government legislation they need to provide proof that their employees are legally entitled to work in the UK. Consequently they have asked us all to bring in our passports so they can photocopy them and update their records accordingly. Imagine my surprise when I discovered that, according to HR records, my country of origin is Mauritius! "OK, you've caught me out", I said. "The law's the law. Put me on the first flight back to my homeland". I'm still waiting!!

Mauritius is just like Newcastle, or so I hear. Both have lots of sea and..........well that's about it, I guess.

@MALUSE Human Resources - what used to be called 'personnel' in the old days and is sometimes now known as 'human remains' or 'headcount reduction'.

Mauritius? It's not a bad place where to go. Insist for a paid ticket.

I found that one employer listed my pay as going into an another employees account - I was able to get it sorted before any income changed hands but thanks to a useless HR team two of us knew each other's bank account details. - all we got was an apology - no one was disciplined over it.

Always seems to be the way. We screw up, we're disciplined! HR screw up, it's just one of those things!!!

@WorDazza they are often unaccountable as they would be the ones we would complain to and they protect themselves

I'm still trying to convince them it's not a mix up. They're still not having it

Mauritius only became independent from the British in 1968? So you could technically have been British-Mauritius! Makes you ok to work in the mothership after all?

@WorDazza Well, you should take time off to "discover your roots" nonetheless. xD

@Drosophila Sadly I can't afford to 'discover my roots' at my own expense. Now, thanks to your research I'm not going to get the government funded repatriation.

And then after a while I guess you have to commit some sort of crime in Mauritius so they will scrutinise your status and deport you back here!
