Has your handwriting undergone any change?

Hello everyone! With the advent of technology, everything is going digital. Now a days we have PCs, laptops, tablets, Note-pads and smart phones etc. to write, to send messages and to chat. Most of us are working on these devices and consequently do not get much opportunity to write on a piece of paper and check our own handwriting. Our handwriting is reflection of our thoughts, it is like a scanned image of thoughts which run in our mind. The other day I was told by a friend that his signature on cheque did not match because he is almost out of practice. He does not need to write anything on paper, as everything he does through his smart phone. Have you lately checked your handwriting? Have you noticed that since you are out of practice and your handwriting has gone hay wire or it is same even without you practicing it? Have a nice day.

My handwriting has never been beautiful. Now it looks worse because I've got arthritis in my knuckles. If writing less by hand is also a reason is something I don't know. But it may be.

It does not matter if your handwriting was not beautiful. What matter is - whether your handwriting is legible or not? If your handwriting is legible even after problems in knuckles and anyone could read it, there is no reason to worry. Lack of practice will surely affect the quality of your handwriting. If one is unwell, his writing does not come good.

My handwriting changed a long time before I ever had a computer. Over a certain period I had several jobs that involved filling in forms, such as salesman and travel agent, which caused me to start using block capitals on a regular basis. This continued for years, by which time my handwriting was abysmal due to lack of practice. I can imagine the same scenario occurring due to computer use these days.

@Asylum - If possible, try practicing for 5-10 minutes so as to retain command on your handwriting.

You feel that nature of your job forced you to write in capital letters and you became accustomed to it over a period of time. Even if you do not get a chance to practice your handwriting, it may still go topsy turvy.

I never had good handwriting but now it is even worse and sometimes I have to have someone else write for me it becomes so unreadable. I much prefer to write in the word processor.

@dpk262006 I doubt if practicing would be of much help since at times my hand starts to shake and then everything is all over the page.

@Marcyaz - I would still say - give it a try, do not worry if your hand shake. Our hand is controlled by our mind and if you think positive in your mind, you will feel the improvement.

Yes, I can understand your predicament that your handwriting has gone worse and so much and so that you require help of others to write something for you. You could try and practice to improve your handwriting, if you feel like.

You are right . Because i always do the writing through the laptop , my handwriting isn't that good as before . But i always get to practice my signature because i always affix it in documents that i have audited .

It means that you are too much dependent on laptops or keyboard of a PC and this has affected your handwriting. If you feel like you could practice your handwriting for few minutes, every other day. It is good that you get a good practice of putting your signatures because you need to sign the documents which you have audited so that others could know that you have checked the documents thoroughly.

@SIMPLYD - When you put your signatures on a (audited) document, the whole responsibility of its authenticity lies with you and God forbids if somethings goes wrong, you might be held responsible for it?

@wiLLmaH - It means your handwriting is illegible and you need to do something about it. You should practice for 5-10 minutes to improve it before it gets murkier.

I still have to write when I am doing college work and giving exams, so not completely out of practice. But yeah most of the time, I do work on gadgets and that's kind of slowing my speed to write. I wouldn't say it affects my handwriting as much as it does to my writing speed. Otherwise my handwriting is just okay, legible to myself mostly, I dunno what others think of that. Haha!

As you have been studying so you need to write during exams and may be also need to write while recording important notes on a particular subject. Too much dependency on gadgets could surely affect the speed of our handwriting and if it happens with you, you could find it difficult to write in exams with speed. You will agree with me that in an exam, time is an essence and if you are not able to complete your exam within the given time limit, it makes you feel bad. If you writing is legible to you, it would be legible to others also, there is no doubt about it. Legible handwriting means that you are a balanced and an organised person. If you have time, you could practice increasing speed of your handwriting, specially when exams draw near.

@ria1606roy - It is wise on your part that you used to practice a lot before writing an exam and you used to complete the exams within the scheduled time. If you feel that your speed is alright, then it is fine, you could skip the practice session and could be here on mylot. My handwriting is legible and speed is fine and whenever I am required to write an exam, I finish it on time.

@dpk262006 that's what I used to do before the gadget invasion began. Before the exams, I practiced writing more so that I could complete the paper in time. I still do that sometimes, but less than before. Speed is alright, and thank God I mostly finish the paper in time. How about you?

@marguicha - It is entirely up to you whether you want to improve your handwriting or not, no one could force you for it. I just gave a suggestion. If you feel good in spending time in cooking, gardening and mylotting etc., it is fine.

Yes, too much use of computer will take away ourselves from pens/pencils and our handwriting will go South. You need to find some time to practice your handwriting.

You see if your signatures have not undergone a drastic change, then there is no need to worry. Bank people see pattern/style in signatures, that should be same. Your two signatures will not match with each other, if you examine it closely. However, you have not mentioned about handwriting? Do you get a chance to write on a piece of paper? Even if you do not get a chance, try to write on piece of paper and see if you are able to write legibly?

Your arthritis has a major role to play in changing your handwriting. If you are unable to hold the pen properly, then your letters will not be uniform and your writing may become illegible.

I try to write with a pen as often as possible, because I find it calming, it is nice to see the letters appear on paper from ink, so I am not too out of practice, though many of my friends complain their handwriting is awful, because they are always on pc's or cell phones.

It is great to hear that in the age of PCs and smart phone you regularly write with pens and it gives you a calming affect. Actually, our thoughts and the way we think gets reflected on the piece of paper. If your handwriting is legible and you feel that others would appreciate it, it shows that you are a balanced person and you are organised in your activities and you accomplish your task in a systematic manner.

There are times when I do have to "write" - and oh, I hate to say it, but my handwriting has gotten pretty "rough". Even my signature has been wittled down to a scribble almost - only legible enough to know it was signed by me!

What I gather is that you do not practice your handwriting much and this could be one of the major reasons for its deterioration. At least, you should pay attention to your signatures, specially when you are required to sign on cheque leaves of some important documents. Imagine what will happen if your bank signatures do not tally, you just cannot withdraw money from your bank account.

It is great to hear that you keep practicing your handwriting and you actually write before typing. Typing per se is not difficult, if you practice the proper typewriting, you will learn it in 15 days, and thereafter, practicing it will increase your speed in typewriting.

My handwriting can be illegible at times, but I don't think that is because of computers. When I worked as a respiratory therapist, I had to do so much charting (before computer charting) and I have noticed my writing is starting to look messy like my dad's and like his parents. A far cry from when I was a kid, it was so pretty and delicate then.

If you feel that your handwriting is messy or illegible, it has nothing to do with your Dad's handwriting. Illegible handwriting is due to your mental state of affairs. If you remain unwell or suffering from any disease or you get tensed, it affects your handwriting. You need to practice everyday for 5-10 minutes to improve your handwriting. Please remember that your handwriting is mirror image of your thoughts running in your mind.

@dpk262006 It is a funny thing, all our handwriting looks the same at this age. I noticed 2 of my 4 sisters handwriting looks the same, as well. I don't care how my handwriting looks, most of it is for my notes for school. When I write a letter, it is very neat and legible.
