Is There Such A Thing As A Healthy Addiction

As I was out on my lunchtime walk I was thinking about the various addictions we all have and wondering if there is such a thing as an addiction. By it's very nature an addiction is something we are compelled to do, most people thing of things like drink and drugs when addiction is mentioned, but it includes everything we do to extreme. I am sure we all know someone who spends far to much time on social media or playing games, now are these addictions any more healthy that drinking to much? Personally I think that anything we do to extreme has a negative side, so I guess for me there is no such thing as a healthy addiction.

I guess a person who is hell bent on staying fit and does exercise daily can be said to have a healthy addiction( towards gym)!! Or someone obsessed with reading stuff!! Knowledge never hurts!! So reading can be interpreted as a healthy discussion too!!

I think reading and learning interesting stuff is a healthy addiction.

I do to @marlina and @rationalwriter I guess the only problem that might occur from this is you become anti social and lose friends if you spend all your time reading books, but that is pretty unlikely to happen I would say.

Well, in a way there can be, I guess. For instance, one could argue I'm addicted to writing. I have to get some thoughts off my chest and what better way to do so than to write them out. Of course, addictions can have several extremes. There are manageable addictions and there are addictions which go out of control. Of course, everyone has their vices, as much as we hate to admit it. Making money could be an addiction for some, but it's a necessity for living. As much as I hate to admit it and wish it wasn't, it is. But, it's not the addiction which is the problem. It's the things people can do to satisfy their addiction. Therefore things can get out of control. The line between dedicated and addiction is very slim, and hard to figure out when it can be crossed.

Well said @megamatt the line between addiction and dedication is indeed very thin and it is indeed the things that people do to fund their addictions that cost them the most.
