Thank you to all those who wished me well for my award ceremony yesterday. The event went exceptionally well, as you can imagine. I found myself amongst lots of amazing people, most of whose work I was already aware of. I felt humbled to be included amongst their midst as someone contributing to the preservation of local history.
One thing struck me as fascinating during the morning. It seems I've made a shift in my life without realising it. Once I considered myself a creative writer and have written many short fictional stories and poems. I then dabbled in memoir writing for a while, my first book being a 1950s school memoir.
Now I've moved into recording community stories and, it seems, the field of social history. Although I have no formal qualifications in this area, I am delighted that my work is being acknowledged by the local history community.
A powerful way of understanding past society is through telling the stories of ordinary people. And that is what I am doing on my current journey. It's rewarding to know I'm contributing to the local work that will be available for others in the future.
I'm extremely grateful to having been awarded enough money to edit and publish my book in a professional way, and for the support other more experienced writers have offered me. The way ahead is exciting.

I am so sorry I missed out on wishing you well, Val. But I can say I am glad all went well. And that it is only right that your work is acknowledged, you are keeping memories alive, adding to future history, and that I think is wonderful.

As I get older I am more and more of the opinion that virtually everyone has an exceptional story. It is amazing what is hidden sometimes.
