Why Did We Stop Using This Kind of Desk?

I know that schools probably still use 'this kind of desk,' but this 'meme' was presented with sort of a "remember back when they used these"-nostalgia.
Do early-childhood schools still use them, but they're usually too restrictive and/or too fragile for us older people and our larger, heavier frames?

We had desks with a box like thing structure We could lift the upper cover and place our books there.

I remember both kinds of those: the desks-separate-from-chairs (with the box-thing under the desktop), and the one-piece with the box-thing under the seat 
(I wanted a "rolleyes" in kind of a 'feeling nostalgic'-way, not in a 'sarcasm'-way ... I ]think the "wub" accomplished that
