Does Black Friday Really Save You Money?

Black Friday is not a part of my Thanksgiving tradition. I nearly always host at least 25 people for dinner at my house on Thanksgiving, and most of them are still there the next day. The last thing I want to do is get up at the crack of dawn to go to a crowded store. However, I heard a piece on the radio today that attempted to answer the above question. They said that often the advertisements make the deals sound better than they really are. Besides that, most people will buy other things while they are in the store, things that are not marked down. Beware of another thing. “Middle-class” people tend to take more time to pay off the debt that they accumulate during the holidays. They are able to get credit to purchase things they cannot really afford. Low-income people cannot get the credit to overspend, and high-income people can afford to pay. So, I will not be attending Black Friday. Cyber Monday is more my speed. More and more I shop online. I do not enjoy driving in crazy traffic, or shopping in crowded stores. Besides, online I have everything I need to compare prices so I can make sure I am getting a good deal.

Usually, my mother-in-law, a friend of hers, along with my sister-in-law, go down for Black Friday. They've done it for the last few years, and have enjoyed. However this year, they just don't have the money. I don't fully understand it, but that's just me. Not really my thing. Cyber Monday seems to make a little more sense, for me.

@norcal I know. I'm the same. Well, with the exception of books. I enjoy shopping for books. But otherwise I shop because I need to.

I think some of us really enjoy shopping more than others. I shop because I need stuff, not because it's fun.

I haven't shopped on Black Friday for years, as the crowds are to heavy, and I don't like the fact that everyone is there to get the same thing. It is crazy to see everyone jostling to get what is on sale, stepping on other people's toes, bumping into them with our carts, and it is such a bad scene. I prefer to wait until after Black Friday, as the crowds aren't bad then. I will just stay home, and relax in my easy chair, and do some mylotting.

Does not sound like fun, at all.

@norcal It isn't. I would much rather be here posting, than trying to fight the crowds. I will wait until the next week to go out and shop, as it will be less crowded.

It's for keeping up with the Jones' anyway. If the store sells enough at a reduced price they can make something on it. Yeah, most of these big savings items are just gimmicks to get people in the store.

Those kinds of days are not my cup of tea.

I think it depends on what you get. Usually I score deals on DVDs which I then use as Christmas gifts. Besides that I really don't see the point of getting too crazy over the sales.

Some people enjoy the excitement I think.

We don't have Thanksgiving in Australia but we still have the mad shopping days from time to time. I'm afraid they are not my scene at all.

So, has the Christmas rush already started there?

@norcal I couldn't really say. We haven't been into the big town near us for ages. The small town where we do most of our shopping seems much the same as always.

@JudyEv That would be nice to have Christmas come and go without a month long rush.
