We still have loads of tomatoes on the plants in the greenhouse but it is time for the plants to come down. As the tomatoes are still green a friend has given me a recipe for green tomato chutney. The recipe seems very easy to follow . I hope it will be delicious. It is the first time I will be making it so wish me luck !

I've never made chutney (or jam) but my mother's a bit of an expert. She once pickled grapes.

I would never have thought of pickling grapes ....what did she eat with them once they were pickled ?

@Traceyjayne she did them for the local flower and produce show. I think it was a case of trying to think of something 'different' to pickle. I'd have liked them more if she hadn't used cloves in the vinegar but they had a surprisingly interesting 'kick' to them. They were good served with cheese - a bit like pickled onions but less tough.

Green tomato chutney is very good and worth making. Goes well with cheese or cold meats at Christmas. If you choose unblemished tomatoes and put them in a warm place with an apple or a banana, the ethylene from the ripe fruit will encourage the tomatoes to redden up. Green tomatoes may look less appetising than red ones but they can actually be safely eaten just the same as red ones. One favourite way is sliced and fried.

thanks for that info .... I would not have ever eaten them while still green as I would have thought that they would have made me ill .... now I shall keep some to fry too x

I have been reading about green tomato chutney but have never tried. I have just got seedlings of tomatoes coming up. Hopefully they will grow into healthy plants and may be some tomatoes. I will try making chutney this time.

I have heard of chutney but never actually had any of it but let us all know if you make it what you think of it so that maybe the rest of us can give it a try.

Can't have those end of season green tomatoes going to waste. I really miss them when They're gone. I just cook them fresh with fried potatoes, bell peppers and onions for some interesting tastes. The rest of my family cooks them rolled in flour but that isn't my taste. Earlier in the season they go chopped into salsa in small amounts. Someone mentioned green tomato Catsup. It is good.not for dipping on french fries but as an additive on a good sandwich.
