I Had to Return My New Glasses

A few days ago, I wrote about how my new glasses were not working for me. Well, I went back to the eye doctor to get my eyes re-checked. He changed my prescription, but said it was only “slightly different,” from the one that wasn’t working for me. In comparing the two, I noticed that, while the other numbers were similar, the axis part seemed significantly different. I bought my glasses at Costco, and had used their in-house optometrist for the first time. The re-exam and remaking the glasses was free, but I did have to drive 50 miles to the store, and had to do without my glasses for a week. I had them ship the remade glasses to me, so I would not have to go back a fourth time. I got my new glasses the night before last, via UPS. As soon as I put them on, I could tell that they were way better. I can see very well now, and it took me no time to get used to my new glasses. I am so glad I stuck with it, and had my glasses redone. Have you ever had to return your new glasses?

My mom had a pair of glasses made at Costco and she has done nothing but complain about them. I wonder if this is normal for all of their stores.

@norcal Yes you are right on this one. I don't know what she did but maybe she had them fixed by now.

@poehere I hope so. My mom wasn't happy with the glasses she got from her eye doctor, but she wouldn't complain about it. She spent over $300 on glasses she won't wear.

I have bought my last 2 pairs before this from Costco, and they were the best I ever had. However, I went to my own optometrist to get the prescription, and only had it filled at Costco. The glasses are half the price of ordering through the eye doctor. I no longer have eye insurance, so I chose to go the the in house optometrist for the first time. I don't know if this is a common problem with that. If she has a problem, she should go back and get them to make it right. That is a lot better than putting up with glasses that don't work for you.

After reading this, I am thinking maybe I should have. I had a very hard time getting used to mine when they were new.

@paigea Are you new to progressives? I have been wearing them for 10 years, and I usually adjust pretty fast. I remember when I got my first ones it took a while though.

I hope they at least are working for you now. As consumers, I guess it is up to us to speak up. After all, we are the only ones who can tell we can't see.

@norcal they work well now for the most part. In the grocery store it takes me a while to get my eyes looking through the right part of the glasses. (progressives)

I never do it. Actually, I have to wear glasses, but I do not do it, because I do not comfortable when wear glasses, whereas my eyes need it.

There are two possibilities, your glasses are not right for you, or you do not wear them long enough to get used to them. I was the same, I only put my glasses on when I needed to read something. Now, I can't see well enough to get along without them, so I have to wear them all the time.

@norcal Actually, my glasses are right for me, but I do not wear them long enough to get used to them. Since, I resign from my work in a private company, I never wear it anymore. So far, I still comfortable read something without glasses, so I never wear it.

I've been lucky so far with my many years of wearing glasses. But I've had a hard time trying to find the right contacts that work for me. Glad yours work for you now. :-)

This is the first time I've had a problem. I have never tried contacts.

@norcal I have an astigmatism, so it makes it an extra pain in the butt. Plus dry eyes. I'm just better off with glasses but I'm stubborn and I like my contacts. I do wear my glasses a lot when I'm home though

It seems extremely incompetent of them to prescribe the wrong lens for glasses. There does not have to be much of a difference to have a significant effect on the wearer.

I probably could have gotten by with the other glasses, it was the signs on the freeway that were a little blurry. I don't know, the doctor said I was "testing different" that day from the last time. They go by what you say looks the best. Maybe this is something that happens sometimes? Either I was seeing different that day, or the test was off.

@norcal Persevering with the first pair would have been a major mistake. Your eyes would have deteriorated much more rapidly due to the increased strain.

NO that did not happen to me but; I went for a new check up for new glasses and was sent by the opthamologist to a retinologist to check mny cataract in my left eye then he told me he wanted me to wait for four months then come back well that was when I had big money problems via Social security so now 2 years later it took a hearing with a judge to get social security to realize they had not overpaid me and to repay the back rent to the retirement center and l ost funds to me then te oid owners seized my lost funds check and left as new owenerss camr in .so Im just now getting back on my feet so maybe you all can see why I stuck with b b for awhile I need money so I can get new glasses etc etc etc.,

Sorry about the hassle and headache. Atleast the re-exam was free. I think I had to get mine redone once when I was a little girl but it has been so long ago that I can't rightly recall.

When I picked them up I questioned whether they were right, but the guy suggested that I try them for a few days. I think they always say that. A lot of people probably just make do with whatever they get I think. I would definitely recommend that anybody who is not completely satisfied go back for a recheck. Your eyesight is too important to settle.

@norcal Not to mention the literal headache that comes from impromper eyewear. You are right that they always say "wait a few days." I think it's because you do normally have to adjust to the new glasses.

That's good, it was a real pain returning them. I am happy now though, that I have nice new glasses, and I am not looking through scratched lenses anymore (that was the original reason I was getting new glasses.)

It always annoys me when we drive some distance for something and then have to do the tip again because something wasn't quite right. I think I would find it difficult to be without my glasses for a week.

Sorry you had to drive so far. Having the right glasses is something ones needs.
