What does American Idol, The X factor, Britian's Got Talent, and all shows of that variety have in common? If you can find the Bests Of, you can often find some really good talent to follow. No, I don't really like the shows themselves (although every now and then you find a gem like then 84 year old Ray Jessel with his America's Got Talent audition, that one still makes me laugh so hard I cry, ahem). These types of shows have helped bring such groups as Pentatonix to fame (Check out their Silent Night if you are in the mood for Christmas, or if you want something else, check out their Save the World/Don't You Worry Child - Pentatonix (Swedish House Mafia Cover)). I have seen some beyond amazing singers, not all the winners. Often the best did not win, and I am glad because they still went on to sing, but had more creative control. One of my favorite discoveries (not as famous on this side of the pond), is Janet Devlin, this little bit I added below is an upbeat fun little song. I love this one. I have it cranked right now, inspiring me! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OPuMQv5pk6E

The thing they all have in common is Simon Cowell. He's responsible for most of the big talent shows of the last 10-15 years.

I don't like him (but you have a point), and in truth, whatever it takes to get these people a chance to be heard!

@boiboing very true, frankly I just appreciate the side effects, many got a chance, and ended up making music, even if they didn't win!

@Jessicalynnt You don't have to like him - and many don't - but he is a business genius.

@Jessicalynnt I will go to YouTube, it's a good idea only to watch the "best of".

I just usually go on YouTube and look for 'the best of' and then watch the really good singers and stuff

Pretty catchy and those shows always bring out the best of voices. She sounds more original so I like.

I don't watch any of these shows themselves but I love some of these musicians who became winners.. Pentatonix is one of them, I also like David Archuleta, Josh Groban etc.,

Judge on many of these shows, if I understand the question, think he funds many of them too,or produces or something

I've heard Pentatonix a few times and agree, they are good. I don't watch any of those shows. The only thing I can think of that they all have in common is music.

I have some weird Trivia, Eventhough she is not getting any promotion, Susan Boyle's albums are still charting. No music videos, no radio airplay but the fanbase she developed from her Audition in Britain's got talent, still buys her songs. The music video you shared reminds me of both red riding hood and alice and wonderland.

These kind of shows were also in the 70's and the 80' and a lot of serious artists got their chances through those shows. Also some singers were in the "star search", a talent show that have been on air from 1983 till 1995, and famous artist like Christina aguilera, Beyoncé, usher and Justin timberlake were there. Also Carrie underwood, Jennifer Hudson, Leona Louis and much more were candidates or winners in talent shows. Because I love music so much I watch all of this shows in my country and used to watch sometur seasons of American idol before I got rid of my Tv. But I also love to watch the high lights of these shows from around the world on YouTube. You can see some pretty amazing things there.

I've just watched Ray Jessel and Janet Devlin. Laughed so had at Ray Jessel. I don't think anyone could foresee what was coming there. So funny! And Janet Devlin was good too. Thanks for sharing these with us.

Yeah, didn't think I should link Jessel, but right? Hilarious. Devlin has some other good stuff. Pentatonix is good, Susan Boyle. Need caffeine can't think of the others
