Why is Wordpress such a popular site? What makes it special?

I keep on seeing people talking and advertising about Wordpress. What makes it special? Is anyone active on Wordpress?

It has a lot of theme options, and it's fairly easy to use. I've been blogging there for quite a while. In fact, my writing blog is about five years old.
