Couchsurfing - Heard of it? Tried it?

Couchsurfing is basically sleeping in someone else's house and they host you. If you are going to have a trip alone or exploring with a friend and you don't want most of your money to be spent on hotels this is the thing for you. I did it when I went to Italy and it was amazing. There are a lot of websites about it but i'm only registered to one. I met my Host by sending a PM and talking about me arriving, he had a lot of recommendation so I didn't have a lot of fear in me about getting killed or kidnapped. When I arrived I was greeted by my host and his roommate and that's how my experience began. I got to see Italy from a local's set of eyes, they made me Italian food, took me to hang with their friends on the beach and a day before my flight back they took me to a club. I had time to explore Rome by myself and you can actually cover Rome in a day or less. I got to meet new people, new cultures AND new food! To top my experience we had more couchsurfers coming in the house and we made dinner. I still have a lot to say, feel free to ask any questions if you are planning on doing it or if you already tried it i'll be happy to hear your thoughts, was it good or bad?

That could have turned out pretty badly. I'm glad it turned out so grand. The only couch surfing I have heard of basically means a person is homeless. Italy must be gorgeous.

Yes, I was afraid at the beginning. The website i'm registered to offers to verify your own account and he was verified and had a lot of positive comments from a lot of couchsurfers. There is a lot of bad things that can happen, someone can even try and take advantage of you. I'm happy I got that experience. Italy is beautiful even though I didn't see all of it, unfortunately all the clothes I bought from there were stolen from me when I got back... So i'll probably return :)

@Karma267 Yikes on your clothes being stolen. Couch surfing is kind of like hitch hiking. The trip sounds glorious- I'm glad it turned out so well for you.

@sallypup Kind of like hitch hiking only you can read about the person on their profile and see what others think about them, good and bad. Do you think you will ever get to try it?
