Four Year Old Still Puts Small Things In His Mouth!!

My 4 year old nephew still seems to put things in his month despite us telling him it is dangerous. Just the other day I got him a pencil case set with rubber and a ruler etc, and he decided to start chewing on the rubber. It is strange as his 1 year old sister does not put anything in her mouth! We have told him not to do it, but he still seems to enjoy it. Was you 4 year old the same?

I guess they were, but I can't remember it's been a few years ago now, mine are 17,16 and 14.

@gudheart I'm sure they did but not totally sure. Yeah time flies by, it makes you wonder where it all goes too.

Yep, long time ago now. I am not sure if it is that common though?

At 4 he should have grown out of it by now so I would imagine he is doing it for attention or because he knows it is naughty. It's a hard one because you don't want to make a fuss if that is why he is doing it but you can't just leave him because it's dangerous. Hopefully you can find a middle ground to train the behaviour out of him. Maybe try the naughty step he is old enough to understand x

I know right! I think he does it for attention as he has a younger sister and a baby sister now that take up a lot of our attention too.

@gudheart Yeah that is probably what the problem is. My sister just had a baby a few weeks ago and there 2 year old has been playing up since then, trying to hit the baby and he pushed my little boy over they get really jealous and little babies do take so much time up it's a hard struggle x

Yeah this is something youd have to watch for sure. Some kids never seem to grow out of it.

@TiarasOceanView I think we just have to keep telling him and hope he realises the safety issue.

Goodness, I've just recalled a dream I had last night where my ten month old niece had put my wedding and engagement rings in her mouth, and one of my lip balms, and was contentedly chewing on them. Nobody seemed to care that she might choke except for me!

Four years old is a little old to still be doing that. I hope his parents find a way to get him to stop.

I was thinking the same. They are telling him it is wrong, yet he still does it. Maybe he is doing it for attention?

My son do that when he was 1 year old to six months but after that no longer do it again. At the age four she now knows that doing it is but I think there is another reason for it like for fun only, for attention or she is just bored.
