Ok I know it is the season of goodwill and all that bla bla but something happened today which will mean a visit to the complaints department of the local post office tiomorrow I live in a five floor block of flats and we have a caretaker here too. Unfortunately she was out when the postman/woman delivered the mail today. I don't get much except bills through the post and am not expecting anything right now but when I went downstairs this afternoon there were two tickets to go and claim two registered letters at the post office. If the caretaker had been in she would have collected them for me but as she wasn't, the postman/woman should have rung my bell and I would have gone down and signed for them because I was at home all morning. But he/she didn't !!! They are not available in the post office until mid-morning tomorrow as the postman/woman has to finish their round and then get them back there but tomorrow I will be busy and had no intention of going out Now, thanks to the sloppy work done by that person. I will have to fit that errand in too They don't deserve to be paid for NOT doing their job!

If nobody got paid unless they did their job perfectly, nobody would get paid.

That is a possibilty these days I guess When I was working I enjoyed my job and got pleasure out of doing it properly. Sad that things have changed and many workers these days feel and act differently.

..and if they tracked down each and every person that has a package coming to them not many packages would get delivered. There has to be some middle ground somewhere.

The Mail system has deteriorated in Italy at the beginning of the seventies and it seems it never recovered. I remember the times when, in Milan, we sent a letter early in the morning and it was delivered in the afternoon. Not in the 1800, in the early 60s.

Oh it has never been that quick here. Now it is just getting so bad that it nit worth the high price. I only use it to send things abroad and that is only a few times during the year.

@LadyDuck Here magazines are only delivered once a week on Saturdays. I don't subscribe to any at alll so I don't have that problem but I can understand that it is for those who do. So many things don't work as well as they should any more

@mysdianait I know that it's very bad now. My mother has a couple of subscriptions to weekly magazines and I cannot count the times that the magazines are not delivered.

That has happened to me numerous times. I have a house, and instead of getting out of their car and knocking on my door, they just stick something in my mailbox saying I have to sign for a certified letter.. which means a trip to the Post Office, which has very inconvenient hours because they close for 2 and half hours for lunch from noon to 2:30. Well if I'm home I don't get out much before noon as I like to relax in the morning, and after 2:30 I can't go anywhere because the kids are getting home from school and we have their routines to go through.

@katsmeow1213 Many places here have a long lunch break like that too while others, including the post office, don't shut at all. Remembering who closes and who doesn't is tricky too sometimes.

@mysdianait I've never understood why they need to close for 2.5 hours for lunch... I only get a half hour lunch!

You shouldn't have to go pick up what they refused to deliveer. that really sucks, and I think I would feel the same way, especially if I had decided not ot go anywehre, and have to waste my time getting out when it isn't necessary. I agree with you that they shouldn't be paid for doing a lousy job, as they have caused you a hardhip having to get out, when you shouldn't have to.

Exactly my point. The mail should be delivered and I should not have to go to collect it and as the job was ot done then no-one deserves to be paid I doubt anything will be done though even after I have complained.

@rosekiss I already have the phone number of the delivery firm concerned. First I will collect the mail and complain at the post office and then call and complain there too. I hope it will help others not to receive the same treatment.

@mysdianait You are probably right about that. Unless others don't get their mail, and they complain, it is highly doubtful they will do anything about it. There has to be a lot of complaining done first before they would even consider it. I hope for your sake, that others complain too, as then your complaint won't fall on deaf ears.

I agree. we have a number of recycling projects here so have a few boxes to put stuff in. We do it religiously...we throw away very little and recycle at least 90% of our waste. The people that pick up our boxes often scatter things around and never put the boxes back. They get paid a surprisingly good wage...they certainly will not be geting a christmas tip.

That sounds so similar to the Italian style of doing the recycling. The men who pick up our different bins also leave a mess and someone (usually the caretaker) has to clean up after them. Is no-one proud of how they do their work anymore these days?

I have encountered this several times and even remember one incident that I heard the card being placed through the letterbox. When I opened the door the van was driving away. Obviously the card had been written out beforehand and pushed through the door to save time and finish early.

@Asylum Maybe not but if the postman did that in other places too then they should not be doing that job. By reporting it someone might look into the complaint and discover what is happening

I encountered this several times, and I am staying in a landed house. There were a few times I was at home, but with the door closed. I was sure the postman didn't even ring the bell, but just assumed there was nobody in the house when the door was closed and no car parked outside.

@mysdianait Yes, if they do that, they do not only make us inconvenient to go and pick up our mails, but also they will burden the workload for their own colleagues as well.

It is totally wrong that they behave like that and don't do their job as it should be done. The mail should be delivered and no assumptions should be made No-one should be paid if they don't do their job correctly!

I wonder. Do they have to ring each individual if the caretaker isn't in? Can't you just call the il office and request that they send the parcels out again? That is what they do here. They give you another chance to receive them.

On the ground floor there is a letter box for each flat and the post is put there. If the caretaker is out then they should ring and whoever has something to sign for, goes down and gets it. That doesn't happen every day so it is not a lot of extra work. As the mail delivery service is outsourced, the post office won't have those letters until the next day tomorrow in this case) and they wil keep them for 30 days and then they are returned to the sender. They do not send them back to the delivery firm to bring them again - but it is assumed that whoever does te delivery does it correctly and that is why I will place a complaint tomorrow when I go to retrive the letters.

@celticeagle That is no longer possible here because the mail is outsourced to another business who deliver it. If, as in this case, they don't, they take it back to the post office and it is then up to the receiver to go and collect it within 30 days. It is possible to send someone else with identification and signed authorisation too but that is not necessary this time as I can go and collect it personally.

@mysdianait ...Why can't you call them and make arrangements for it to be redelivered the next day? I don't see the problem. I do that here a lot.

Locally I have peace with the postal workers. I have to travel three kilometers to get to the mailbox but at least it gets there. I have had some colossal postal woes in the past long stories though. Very frustrating at the time. Complaining was an exercise in futility too.

I am thining that placing a complaint might not make any difference but just i case other people have already had cause to make complaints about this person I am going to give it a go in the hope that it never happens again.

Yes that is another part of the problem. I could go and pick it up now but on the ticket the time states that it will be there in another two hours from now. So annoying as at that time I will be busy and can't go out

That's lame why would they outsourced when those delivery people are completely wasting not only your time but theirs too. what's wrong with having their own delivery system, it's mail service! there shouldn't be any kind of outsourcing

If this is a new person who is filling in for the holidays maybe they don't understand to ring you. If your building has a caretaker it is up to them to recover your mail for you and sign for it. I don't really blame the mail carrier as much as I do your caretaker for not being on duty and doing their job.

This is not a new person or a substitute for the holidays. It is the regular person, who according to the caretaker, has often done the same thing for other residents here. The caretaker is not on call 24/7 and during certain hours is absent and unavailable. Those hours are stated on the door to her flat and include 10.30 - 12.00 during weekdays. The mail, according to the ticket, was delivered at 11.30 and it was the responsability of the person delivering it, and not of the caretaker, to do their best to see that it reached its destination. If the caretaker happens to be there when the mail is delivered it is by courtesy, and not obligation, that she receives any ergistered mail or parcels for us as that is not part of her job at all.

@mysdianait OK I am so sorry and was just thinking of an alternative reason why they did this to you. In such a case as this then maybe you are right and they should lose some of their pay for the day.

I once had a package that was to arrive on a certain day. It was an expensive item and I didn't want it left on my porch. I was in my living room the whole day waiting for that package. It didn't arrive. I called and they said oh yes the delivery man tried to deliver it but no one was home. The delivery man was lying as I was on my couch 10 feet from the door. If he had knocked I would have heard him.

Mail delivery is outsourced by the post office here and that means they were totally disinterested when I phoned in to complain. They gave me the name of the delivery firm - but they didn't answer the phone Tomorrow I will make a written complaint at the psot office. We don't get much mail these days s they have not a got a huge job on their hands to deliver what few letters there are.
