Tonight I noticed two things at my local Walmart- One- there was a greeter at the entrance saying hello and checking receipts. Two- the self checkout registers were replaced with regular "speedy checkout" registers of 20 items or less. I am glad the self checkouts ere taken out and replaced. Every time I would use one, something would always seem to go wrong, If I remember correctly, there were eight of them and they were watched over by one cashier. I've always hated it when they would have those open instead of the regular speed checkouts. Lines would back up because people like were just not meant to use them. Oh ! The frustration ! As for the greeter, it makes no difference to me if there's one or not. I'm just glad they don't have an annoying bell being rung constantly in their hand.

A lot of people are easily stealing stuff through the self check-out. They just act like they swiped it and rung it up, put it in a bag, and into their shopping cart. With only one worker supervising the many self-checkout kiosks, who may be busy helping someone else, it's easy to get away with.

It makes it easier to scan barcodes for cheaper items, too. There was a group here who would go in, have someone have "trouble" with the machine to distract the attendant, and then the other person would pretend to buy a bunch of stuff and leave.

@Angelee_27 - yeah , ive seen that happen over here. which is why i laugh at those machines that supposedly detect the lil anti theft tags at the exits.

I honestly don't like how they check receipts. This isn't Costco! I already paid, it's not like I'm stealing!!! The self check out was a hit/miss for me also.. majority of the time - I would get an error and it'd ask me for sales assistance and everyone else's machines would prompt the same error too resulting in more time wasted!

Last time I was in England I was faced for the first time with one of these self checking spots. It threw me out so much that my daughter- in -law, who saw the look on my face, said I looked as though I had landed from a different planet! I like to be served by a smiling face and even better a second smiling face that packs my bags.

Some of my local convenience stores have installed sensor doors which would greet you with a loudspeaker saying "Hello, welcome to XXX store" when you come in. The funny part is, when you get out through the door, it will greet you again "Hello, welcome to..."

I hate the self check registers. Some are so sensitive they just stress the heck out of me.... i put down an envelope of onion soup and "ERROR - item missing" um it weighs next to nothing.. = frustraited shopper! If I have the time, I have found I would prefer a human to ring out my purchase. Plus these machines take away jobs! Even if they are minimum wage jobs, a job is still a job that would be better done by a person than a machine.

yeah, i never liked the fact that if you have a problem you have to somehow get the persons attention to help you. especially when that person is looking out for 4 or more self serve registers.

Yeah, @Plethos , the door greeters were taken off the doors several years ago because the main office decided they were unnecessary... All the other stores in our area (14 within a 30 mile radius, I think) have restored the door greeters as they deter thefts from the stores, but the one I work at hasn't done that. None of the regular associates can figure out why, either, and you know management isn't going to tell us!

@Plethos A door greeter is supposed to stop any customer with a tv or some other large purchase and check their receipt against the items purchased. Few people are willing to stand there and tell an old person they are not stealing something they are obviously stealing! The door greeter may also have a call button on them to signal a robbery in progress wirelessly to store security and the local police.

@DaddyEvil - i have a thesis, i think most big item theft is done in-house. most theft done by customers is small items that are easily obtainable. even easier with the food section, ive know people to hide things in with the food items.
