Not A Brilliant Idea!

The Christmas Train by LadyDuck

I am back from my last shopping trip, the mall was crowded. As every year, the main floor of the mall hosts the Christmas village. A miniature train passes through the village and kids under the age of 13 can ride the train. The setting is nice, but I cannot understand why they have put the train stop just in front of the escalators. It is almost impossible to circulate! There are relatives taking pictures, shoppers who stop to have a look, children that scream to be the first on the train... a real mess! How is the crowd in the malls at your place?

I have not been to a mall in years Anna, here it is way beyond my budget. I know it will be full of people anyways. I love malls and used to always work inside them.

@LadyDuck Yes that would be practical for you since you go to the mall once a week to go shopping.

Our supermarkets are inside the mall, that is quite practical when it snows. So I go to the mall once a week for my grocery shopping.

That doesn't seem a very sensible place for it. I haven't been in any malls lately thank goodness.

The two grocery stores and the Post Office are inside this mall. I had to send a urgent parcel, it has been exhausting!

@LadyDuck Fortunately our big supermarket stands alone, and so does the Post Office.

@jaboUK This is a small village, most of the shops are inside this quite big mall. It is true than when it snows it's more practical to have everything in the same place.

Malls are going out of hand these days We too have all kinds of features that attract children and mixing them up with the business area is not a good idea.

@LadyDuck Most of my shopping is done online and the routine grocery shopping is done by our helpers. There is a Mall here that offers heavy discounts on Wednesdays I witnessed it only once and vouched never to go there again (lol)

I am going to send an email to the Mall manager and let him know that this new setting is creating a problem. I hope he will consider a change for the next year.

I haven't been to our local mall yet this year, as I am avoiding it like the plague! I imagine it is a madhouse there with everybody scrambling to finish up their Christmas shopping. But I do remember from year's past that they would set up Santa's workshop right in front of the escalators, and the line of people waiting to get their kid's picture taken with Santa Claus would be so long it would end up blocking access to the escalators. However, I think that they couldn't move Santa's workshop to any other location in the mall, because in front of the escalators was the only place in the mall with enough room to set up the big display.

At least the Santa workshop is on the upper floor of the Mall, I never go there, because the two grocery stores are on the main floor.

I love trains! Malls are avoided, as the one in my city was so crowded at holiday time there was no way I would step out of the car and the chances of finding a parking spot weren't likely. This past year I did a lot of shopping online, as it was stress free and easy. I buy gift cards and use them to pay the bill, as receive points to save on gas when I buy them at the grocery store.

@LadyDuck I think that is a smart move. Its likely to happen in my house when we start traveling, as my husband and I just buy it when its something that needs to be purchased.

@LadyDuck That is true. The only reason gifts are purchased now is for my daughters boyfriends brother, as he is in 5th grade and a friend of the family, who has twin baby boys and a 3 year old. The babies won't remember their baby clothes; however, purchased books for the 3 year old and child in 5th grade. I enjoy visiting the book store and am glad the 5th grader is reading. He loves trains like me.

@Fishmomma There is no reason to feel obliged to buy something because you know that you will receive something that possibly you do not even like.

It is more popular now here in Singapore to do an online shopping. :) When I went to a mall last Saturday, it is not as crowded as before.

@wiLLmaH In small Swiss villages people do not care to have grocery delivered at home, they want to go to the shop and choose personally everything.

I have no choice, our grocery stores are inside the Mall. When they have built this Mall (40 years ago) most of the shops around the village decided to move there. It's not a big mall, but with one stop I can buy everything I need.

@AbbyGreenhill Yes, this is the worst time of the year, but I appreciate to have one place where to go and find everything, we had covered parking, connected to the mall, so not too hot in summer and not cold in winter.

Busy. Some will queue for hours, ignorant of the fact the children bore easily... Not sure that the escalator being blocked is good from an escape-route perspective either...

I don't go anywhere near them Anna although last week when I went to the supermarket it looked like people were shopping for armageddon and the end of the world. For goodness sake the bloody shops are only closed for one day and some shops even open on Christmas day. It is quite sickening really. It sounds a bit of a hazard placing the ride so close to the escalators.

It is becoming dangerous even to approach the shops. I had only to buy a few things at the grocery store, but I had to cross the mall, it was horrible. I came back home with a headache. It's incredible how noisy people can be.

@LadyDuck I think they put the trains there so you can't miss them. Our malls are so crowded this time of year that it is almost impossible to get a parking space. I love to go to the mall this time of year to look at the decorations but not to shop.

The kids do not miss the train anyway, putting the stop in front of the escalators is dangerous, imagine if there is an emergency, the manager should think at this, because if something happens he will be held responsible.

@LadyDuck what I mean is, it's all involved in the commercialism of Christmas. They don't want to miss making even one penny. I do agree, it's a horrible spot to put it. They seem to do it though in every mall I've been in.

I haven't been to any of the large malls lately so I don't know as my last shopping trip was online. It sounds like someone needs to inform security at the mall that this being so close to the escalator is a hazard to people.
