Travelling and Exploring new places.

I believe many of you here would love to travel to different places and explore new places. I like to travel and explore. How do you people get ready for a trip (a short duration of 3 to 4 days) or a tour (say more than a week), how you prepare, for you to travel what are the mandatory things you should have apart from the basic needs, what would be your expectations from the travel, which kind of travel would you prefer, do you always properly plan or its a spontaneous one, do you like to bring some tangible things from the places you have visited, say just for memories.

I have visited North India, Digha and Puri seaside attractions, the heritage sites of Odhisa and the beautiful hills of Darjeeling, Lava and Purulia. On those tours I never had to keep anything on mind since I was with family. But now I'm going to Shantiniketan with some friends of mine this February, and the preliminary bookings are done, however the practical planning and implementations are left. So let's see what happens. I'm personally very excited because I love to travel and explore places. Knowing about a new land is always a pleasure to encounter.

@WriterMukund Thank you for this priceless advice, I really needed it. The accommodation fares are not paid yet, we have booking at the Forest Dept. Lodge through a contact. So we will be paying there, however we know the rates. And yes there is a list made of all the places and time to visit them, plus the fares for travelling to different tourist attractions there. The one thing you rightly spoke about was the shopping, so I'm keeping a moderate amount aside for that, to buy something for family. I'll keep your tips in mind.

@ria1606roy Great that you have visited so many places. Also since you are now going to a new place, I hope you have done some prior research. Now a days much of the information is available on the internet, so even if you have not done, you can go ahead and do it as you have ample amount of time. You can also make a list of what all places to visit. You can even create a plan, a complete and detail micro-managed plan. This would be helpful if you are going on your own and not through any package tour. This will help you to adhere to the schedules. One more important thing is the financial planning. Since you mentioned that the preliminary bookings are done, I assume you have paid for the travel and accommodation fares. Apart from these there are many others such as entrance fees to any temple/museum, charges for the camera, if you plan to give some amount to the charity such as any temple etc. Then there is one inevitable thing which is shopping. Keep a budget for all these. Don't be too rigid. You can keep a certain range. If your expense is at the starting of the range or less than the range then you can treat yourself :) :) If it falls in the range then it is good and if it exceeds the range, then you can plan more accurately for your next trip :) :) Have a safe and happy journey and also share any memorable experiences you had in the trip :)

For many of us here, we travel at least once a year, and some even travel for leisure a few times a year. Some of us like to travel very light, so that we do not have check-in luggage. If the luggage is less than 7kg, we can carry on board the budget airline, and that is a price saver.

@scheng1 That is really cool. Yes, if you have a heavy luggage then you have to shell out some extra bucks. Also, do you maintain any diary or a list of the places you visited ?

@WriterMukund No need to keep a diary. if we want to go anywhere, we just book the air ticket or the tour package and just go.

@scheng1 That is great. From our recent trips we have started maintaining a small diary where we make note of the places we visited.Any exciting event happened on the journey. We note down what new dish we ate, what was the specialty of the place we visited. They are just for our references. In future when we read them, we can have a good laugh :)

I love travelling also. I usually try to go one new place a year. Its always crazy being outside your comfort zone and learning about customs and cultures different than your own. I always try to be prepared by doing research a head of time and making a tenative plan as to where to go, what to do, the places that are safe or unsafe.

I'm not a light traveller. When I travel to new place usually I'll do culinary tour on my 1st day and then exploring the craft market. I make list of the places I want to visit. I like being lost sometimes then asking local people where should I go. I will bring 1 or 2 power bank for my phone.

I have travelled a lot in my life. More than MOST people, I would say. I have enjoyed my travels but now I don't enjoy the hassle at the airports, so I have basically stopped traveling by air. I still take short trips to areas that are within 100 miles or so of where I live and honestly, I think that is a great idea to explore your immediate area. I have found several really interesting places to visit and explore that are nearby, and just a few hours of driving there works for me. I have learned to pack light, so I don't take much with me, when I travel. Basic clothes that can be interchanged to create a different outfit. I used to teach a class about this very subject, called the 7 Day Wonder Dress. I also roll my clothing when I pack. It takes up less space and eliminates wrinkles. There is much more I could say, but I'll cut this short.

@IreneVincent Wow, that is really exciting. Great to know that you have visited so many places. Yes you are right, sometimes we visit the far off places but we never pay a visit which are nearer. Have you visited India as well ?

infact travelling is my hobby,I love to do that.and believe that if going gets tough then tough gets going,i too have visited almost every spot in north of india but the most important one was my recent tour to "Jog falls" in karnatka.my trip was planned till here,we calculated about all the important things to carry with.but journey from here to goa was approachable and we made a decision spontaneously about getting there with no idea of anything just belief that i have to get there.it proved to be more adventorous more amazing with greater excitement good things to explore, the beauty of nature and many more, infact it prooves to be more lively.the only difference i can compare in both the formats of travell are equally beautiful but spontaneou plan means u should have extra in ur nerves to get done through ur destination at any cost, not forgetting the pleasure of doing it.

@abhinalstrikr Wow, it is great. That is really adventurous. Going to a place without any plan is really an adventure in itself.

In the past I travelled a lot, but I can't afford to travel at the moment. I always travel light. I don't like to carry a lot of stuff when I travel from place to place, but I always bring my camera and some notebooks. I take many pictures and I am a writer so I always need my notebooks. Before my trip I read travel guide books or find information about sights and interesting places on the internet. I don't make a detailed itinerary before my trip, but I write down the names of the most important sights or places that I want to visit during my trip.

how much I take with me depends on the trip - I want enough clothes, soap, etc. for the trip, enough money, etc. I might carry more if camping rather than staying in a hotel. I'll look up the areas best places to visit, shows to see, and enough camera power for my stay. I do try to collect souvenirs and gifts for friends
