I have not paid my income tax for 2015 earnings

Paying income tax is one of the most painful tasks in our lives. Fortunately I do not live in countries where they deduct income tax directly from your salary. In Singapore, we pay our income tax about a year later. The employer uploads our income to the government by February, and we update our claimable reliefs by April. The tax department starts processing after April. I have not paid my income tax for my earnings last year. That is because the assessment is not out yet. I think I do not have to pay more than ten dollars in income tax. I rather get the income tax assessment earlier and get done with it. My income is not that much. In Singapore, those who earn less than S$21,000 do not have to pay income tax. My income is just slightly above that, and after deducting the tax reliefs, I do not think the income tax is more than ten dollars.

Ten dollars is a really small amount. In my country we have some of the highest taxes in the world. Each time I earn 10 dollars I receive 5 dollars, because my income tax is 50%. People who earn more than me pay more than 50%.

That is because of the social benefits provided by the government. We do not have such social benefits. There is no social security, or free medical or free education. Everything is payable by us, though some poor people get subsidies.

Actually we also pay the year after in France, and it put me in troubles several times in my life, when I switched from a well paid job to a job with less income (the opposite is not a problem). I would prefer to have the taxes deducted at source. It will be the case in a few years here.

I like our current system. I do not like to have income tax deducted at source. As long as you have saved up for income tax, and you know roughly how much you have to pay, you will not get into trouble.

@topffer In Denmark taxes are deducted at source and it has been that way since 1970. Before that time we had to pay taxes one year later. I was born in 1976 and I don't remember the old system, but I prefer the current system where taxes are deducted at source.

@scheng1 It depends of the amount. I had a bad year about 30 years ago where I earned less income than the taxes to pay for the previous year. In such a case it is difficult to be a squirrel.

That is really low. But most people I know don't even make $10,000 a year.

Most people I know earned much more than me, and they probably pay lesser tax than me. Once they have children or parents to support, they can get away with low income tax, because of the reliefs. over here, there is no such thing as social security or free medical care or unemployment benefit.

It is what it is, we are waiting for our earnings paperwork from our state as we are retired, then we will file our taxes. Our government states that all earnings paperwork has to be mailed by the last day of January and taxes must be filed by April 15th.

If you are retired, why would you have to pay income tax? Over here, annuity income and interest earned from investments are not taxable. I think that is really a good thing.

I also hate paying income tax but we have to pay it. You should also pay tax in time. All the best!
