Remind me again why plus-sized women shouldn't do yoga

Yoga is so far one of my favorite activities. Even if I don't indulge myself in it, I find it very beneficial when I either feel stressed or lethargic. After doing some more research about yoga, I found out that it's not only to keep one fit physically but also it promotes mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being. In my opinion, yoga is not just any typical exercise. It's almost like Taichi which doesn't focus on toning nor building muscles. It works in a more profound manner; it brings out your inner strength and teaches you how to control not only your body but also your energy, which I do believe everyone can benefit from it. I am semi-surprised when I read some comments about how yoga is not recommended to plus-sized women. First of all, I am not surprised that some people can be ignorant by saying plus-sized women shouldn't do yoga. Secondly, I have practiced a few sports and I know pretty well that one can learn to work their way in being good at any kind of activities. I mean, I was chubby when I started practicing tkd. Yes, it wasn't that easy but I got better as I kept on practicing. I was already slim when I started learning capoeira. Yet there's this bigger lady who kicks asses and, damn! She's so good AND strong even after just practicing it for a year or two. We've all seen how people with different disabilities have been able to do the same things that we all do on a daily basis. Moreover, some are able to surpass a normal person's ability to draw, to drive, to fly, to swim, to dance--you name it! So for whoever said or think that plus-sized women shouldn't or can't do yoga, remind me again, why not? Check out the video:
Body confidence and self-acceptance are topics that have grown in popularity over recent years. Why? The fact of the matter is that our world is still filled...

Physically it is more difficult for plus sized women. But, there are types of yoga, hatha yoga for one, that is less of a problem. There are several different types of yoga.

Exactly why yoga can be for everyone in general because it's not limited to a certain body type. The problem is that there are people who think plus-size women "shouldn't" do yoga for ridiculous reasons.

She is an incredible example that anyone can do anything if they set their minds to it. Those that believe that bigger people shouldn't do such activity probably have issues of their own that they fail to address.

It is very sad to think people would tell plus size women not to do yoga. It doesn't matter what your size is (or your gender for that matter).

I am a sportsman myself. I played professional football in my schooldays, college days n university days. The one thing i learned in all these years is that doing exercise is not important but doing correct exercise is very important. Now coming to your query. Plus sized women can also do yoga. But they should do it correctly under gudience of a teacher and should not use physical force to do it. As it connects to your mental n physical strength at same time.

I agree. If someone could have said that plus-size women can't do this or that yet because it requires more balance and strength (like just balancing with your two hands while one of your legs is over your nape), then I would have understood that.

I have attended some yoga classes and luckily never heard that it was bad for plus size people. I always heard that it can be adapted for every ability.

Yepyep.. which is why those people who find reasons as to why plus-size people shouldn't do yoga obviously don't know much about yoga.

You cannot define Yoga as a physical activity. Yoga is a Hindu spiritual and ascetic discipline. It includes breath control, meditation, and body postures. It is for everybody, even very old men and women.

@mnjhun1 NO! Look at the definition in any dictionary Yoga is absolutely not considered a physical activity, not if it's done the right way.

But yoga is a physical activity because you move your body, you work with your body to get in different positions

I guess I can imagine that. I see a lot of women here wearing their clothes obnoxiously for me. There can be some things that will bother us but still not enough reason to tell them that they should stop doing yoga. Not unless someone's gonna get hurt if they don't.
